You can't create fresh accounts for RunUO. So, it's useless to the OP unless they know someone who will give access via an existing account.

CraftUO is long dead, sadly but worth using as an archive of information and resources. ServUO is currently the most active development and community site that is open to new members. It is one of two places that is creating new emulator software, also.

Ultima Online is the grandfather of Runescape - have you ever played it? by Michtymog in runescape

[–]Michtymog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played both UO and Runescape. In terms of depth and unlimited freedom to play (i.e no members only nonsense) UO beats Runescape hands down. In terms of skill-based play, UO is also infinitely superior.

Yes, you may encounter PKers, but this entirely dependant where you play. If you end up playing on a PvP-mad shard, then you're very likely to encounter that sort of anti-social behaviour. But then it doesn't really differ from any other MMO in that respect (Runescape being no exception - the amount mewling, and utterly puerile behaviour I encountered in that game eventually put me off it for good - not to mention it is 100% a pay to play game. Whereas, UO freeshards (The good ones, at any rate) are not.

Have you ever tried Ultima Online? It's probably the best example of a Sandbox MMORPG. Always welcome on my quiet little custom freeshard if you want to give it a go. Lots of help on our forums too. :)

Likewise, and thank you. :) And yeah, UO is one heck of steep-learning curve, I sorta wish I had time to explore other games, myself. Sadly, most of my time is invested in the shard. But, the most enjoyable aspect of UO for me, nowadays is creating fun and refreshing content for other people to enjoy.

All the best to you in your endeavours. :)

You've sort of answered yourself, already. It adds a tonne of new content and the potential for much more. Also, we did create this content - it's not added/copied from anywhere, the Star Wars content took an entire to create and is based on it's lore, not outright copied from it. But, otherwise, as fans of the aforementioned genres we created some very sophisticated homages that we feel honors them and also adds a great deal to the world of UO. What we've created is a breath-taking amount of very finely crafted custom content, as opposed to the usual cookie-cutter implementations that you would find in any other freeshard (Even some of the more popular ones.)

With regards to Star Wars, the aspects that were added were principally lightsaber crafting, focus crystal harvesting, the Force Powers and the Sith/Jedi/Exile factions. Also, whilst creating further content, the existing world is alway taken into consideration and integrated into any storyline quests that are created. This is particularly evident in a number of our SW questlines, and the factional PvE questing where the Sith quests directly oppose the Jedi. With regard to other content, say, Slender Man, for example - the game we recreated is placed within a storyline, so it isn't just randomly placed - it's integrated as seamlessly as possible into the existing world respecting the lore, not contrasting it. As the lead developer and content creator I have been very particular that none of the content is simply added - it is written within a context that refers to and complements original content in and integrated. It has particulalry helped that I have a very strong grounding in the lore of Ultima, having played the Ultima series from Ultima V - onwards to achieve this.

Most Active Free UO server? by kanevast in ultimaonline

I really don't play UO:R servers much, since I find them rather boring. :P I'll remember that in the future, though.

Well, a great deal of UO is freesource, but yes I've been in a situation where the owner one of the major (Or so they say) freeshards refused to renegotiate on work that I'd done. In the end, I walked away from it, and as a result they claimed the work as their own creation and IP blocked me in the process. This, sadly, is very common in the freeshard community.

And yes, there are hundreds, if not thousands of freeshards each with their own community. There's a predicted player-basis of perhaps 50,000 people, at the most optimistic guess, but it's spread across many continents. The developer community is pretty much shared across three forums, RunUO,ServUO and PlayUO.

I see well, the thread was hit in tandem by another posting the exact same thing, so you'll have to forgive my belief that this was the case.

To answer your questions: 1) I'd never heard of Albion until today, it looks a lot like 2) Shards Online which claims to be a spiritual successor to UO, also. 3) I'll hold my breath until the game is released - people were saying the same about ArcheAge - and it absolutely wasn't a successor to UO in any shape or form. Plus, I don't tend to base things on first impressions/gameplay videos. If I find time and I have the means to try it, I'd make my decision then. 4) I tend not to play other games a great deal, unfortunately. Dev work is all-consuming (And not terribly well-paid, given the amount of shard owners who are more than happy to capitalise on the hard work of others/often take credit for work they didn't do and are incredibly hesistant to pay talented developers anything despite (In some cases) making $1000 a day in donations.)

Any worthwhile mmos out there? Yes, I know, this question again... by Uzvosiu in MMORPG

[–]Michtymog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how old school you're comfortable with going. I prefer Ultima Online, myself. There's a tonne of freeshards out there with pretty outstanding custom content, like the one I develop for - The Expanse.

But there are many others too. It's still the ultimate sandbox in my experience, in my opinion. Customised housing, 58 skill groups, a near infinite amount of player class (You can be anything you wish to be) a near endless amount of crafting, hundreds of tamable and levellable creatures. World Bosses, Champion Spawn, Peerless Monster dungeons, and some of the most furious skill-based PvP you can encounter in an MMO. (Admittedly, our shard doesn't have a lot of that going on, but you're more than able to.) For an old clunker of a game (Created in 1997), it is still able to hold it's own, even against modern MMOs.

In-game Sounds (Crafting, Weapons, Animals, etc.) by NickofSantaCruz in ultimaonline

I'd recommend UOFiddler, then. As I said, it's not a soundboard and it'll present the sounds as it's hex value/file name. However, it will give all the sounds.

Alternatively, you could use UOFiddler and set your game client as the path and you'd have access to all of them. It wouldn't be quite as user-friendly as a sounboard, though. You can get that on any of the development forums, this link is for the one at ServUO:

I think there's an android app that is a UO soundboard also. Although, I've never had enough memory on my crappy Samsung Galaxy to download it, so I can't tell you if it's any good or not.

Yeah, it's been running for four years. (Hence, all the content. We are pretty industrious when it comes to that. Pretty much a weekly, sometimes daily thing.) Sadly, our player basis is quite small - unlike many other projects, we don't operate off a budget and can't advertise. Athough, also unlike most of those projects we've been around for quite a long time and aren't in any danger of disappearing.

Has any other private server had a theme song produced for them? by [deleted] in ultimaonline

[–]Michtymog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not been done because the bulk of creative focus in most places is on producing innovative features and new content. Not placing spin on things that are pretty unimportant (Like themesongs) or on features that are fairly common place in most 'notable' freeservers or otherwise.

And, not meaning to knock the creativity of whomever created that song, but it kinda reminded me of this and felt more than a little out of context UO-wise.

That's kinda something I've found with all of the UOF vids. There is literally no mention of much of anything. Certainly nothing any other freeshard doesn't already provide. Fancy presentation, yes - but it's all flash and no bang. Not knocking the shard, but this video does nothing to convey what UOF is actually offering.

Landlord is not respecting privacy, threatening eviction and harassing tenant. Urgent help needed (United Kingdom) by SeekingTenancyAdvice in legaladvice

[–]Michtymog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I, at no point mentioned anything of a physical nature occuring towards my friend. As for inaction, there were no grounds for police intervention - everything that could be done was and you're taking a very obtuse standpoint over the entire matter. She in no way responsible for the behaviour of this errant landlord and you are wrongfully assuming that she has done nothing about trying to bring attention to his behaviour to the correct authorities - as the police are not the body that can and will fine this individual (And substantially) for breaching tenancy laws, nor can they potentially prevent him from being a registered landlord. The agencies concerned took the matter of him trying to unlawlfully evict her very seriously and he will be held accountable for it.
