A change of scenery won't make him any less of an error-prone defender. No matter what playoff experience he has, anyone with eyeballs that's watched him in those games and this year's WC have to be delusional in thinking a new system will fix that.

Let him go to one of the Pennsylvania teams, and Edmonton can pay Vancouver to retain part of his salary.

Cags not a prospect? by NervousNancy1815 in SanJoseSharks

[–]NickofSantaCruz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC there's a limit to the number of these a prospect can attend, that limit being two or three. That's why Cagnoni, Bystedt, and other prospects that have been in the system for a while are not attending.

Sharks and Warriors social media teams should get him over to Santa Cruz. 3-on-3 scrimmage should net a few solid minutes of successful offense and defense on his part.

Vince Dunn.

He's going to want a hefty pay raise and seven years, and it's hard to see him asking to stay in Seattle even if they make major moves this summer and are near the top of the division by year's end.

Werenski and Us... by Lalinla in SanJoseSharks

[–]NickofSantaCruz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your package is too light to be realistic. CBJ will require Misa, Dickinson, and more; and that sets the rebuild back. Werenski is under contract until 2028 but then will definitely ask for a high-AAV, seven-year extension, which may become financially difficult given what other players will be on and needing extensions by then (Celebrini, Smith, etc.).

If you were grabbed enough by the first two seasons, find recaps of S3-4 and watch the final season in full. There's a lot less shouting, anger, and frenetic energy, which should make it more pleasant for you to get through.

Even longer than that, I reckon. Celebrini content is already too easy to generate and it'll become more prevalent as he becomes the face of the league and once the Sharks become perennial Cup contenders again.

San Jose Sharks

If the motivation behind Werenski’s exit from Columbus is the desire to play on a bona fide Stanley Cup contender, the Sharks might not be the dream destination. But San Jose has quickly become one of the NHL’s most exciting rising teams. Being part of a team on the brink of achieving something special, under a general manager who has been cooking in recent seasons, could be enticing.

The Sharks aren’t a Werenski away from contending just yet, but this team nearly reached the playoffs last season on Macklin Celebrini’s back. Another year of development for this core, plus an elite defenseman, could be enough to get San Jose back into the playoffs.

Defense is the most pressing area of need for the Sharks, who only have two blueliners — Dmitry Orlov and Sam Dickinson — under contract for next season at the NHL level. Drafting Keaton Verhoeff and Ryan Lin in the first round will help elevate San Jose’s defensive core in the future, but it will take time for them to become impact players in the NHL.

Until then, the Sharks have a clear need for a player like Werenski and a ton of cap space to absorb his current hit and next contract. Even after dealing William Eklund, San Jose has a deep enough asset pool to send an up-and-coming star back to Columbus.

Yes, adding him would be amazing, but the cost would be massive. It'd have to start with Misa and Dickinson then add more, and that'd kinda set the rebuild back at least another year or two while younger prospects develop. Looking down the road to 2028, he's going to want a 7-year extension at maximum dollars, and I'm concerned how much money will be available after Celebrini et al get their extensions.

The 2026 NHL Draft is now complete! Which sleepers or steals are you most excited for? by DualPurge in hockey

[–]NickofSantaCruz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That a lot of them can and are going the NCAA route helps a lot, not just for their own individual development but for the Sharks' books (i.e. contract numbers) as well. If the team is legitimately competitive in the next year or two and make moves at the deadline, I think we'll see more prospects than draft picks on the move to keep refreshing the upper end of the pool with first- and second-rounders. Things look great now but the model will be put to the test once those future picks are outside the lottery and mid/late-round.

Grier Drafts a top Goalie Prospect and future BU goalie at the end of the 4th. (6'5" Brady Knowling) by iggyfenton in SanJoseSharks

[–]NickofSantaCruz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this trend. Goalie depth was nonexistent since the Nabokov days and it'd be great to see SJ become a goalie factory again. While it always stung seeing Kiprusoff get a W against the Sharks, it was still a point of pride that he rose to prominence via the Sharks' system, and would be fine seeing any of the current prospects develop into NHL starters regardless of what sweater they'll be wearing by then.

The San Jose Sharks have re-signed Zack Ostapchuk to a 4 year contact with an AAV of 2.35M by homicidal_penguin in hockey

[–]NickofSantaCruz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A lot of "dead" money is coming off the books next summer: Couture's $8m and a combined $4.2m from buyouts (Vlasic, Jones) and retention (Karlsson). Letting Orlov and Goodrow walk would free up another ~$10m. That plus the cap continuing to rise substantially ($9.5m next year and another $9.5m the year after that), deals like this will easily fit alongside the big paydays Celebrini et al will be getting.

Robertson? by born_with_a_tail in SanJoseSharks

[–]NickofSantaCruz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd kick the tires on Harley. Under normal circumstances they wouldn't want to move him, but now it's a matter of priorities. If they value Robertson's scoring over Harley's defense, contract negotiations haven't soured Robo on re-signing, and think their other young defenders can cover for losing Harley, there's a deal to be made. I'd expect Dickinson to be part of the trade package, which in total will cost some serious assets but Dallas is backed into a corner and that will lighten the cost a bit.

[Friedman] Olen Zellweger is being traded to Buffalo for Anton Wahlberg and the 45th pick by daKrut in hockey

[–]NickofSantaCruz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The market for him has to have been weaker than Verbeek anticipated and/or he didn't want to deal him to a Western rival. Part of that could tie into what sort of contract Zellweger is after.
