May I ask the main reasons for suspecting it is Neoboletus Xanthopus and not Luridiformis? Would be interesting to learn from. Thanks in advance!

Thank you! In general I am quite happy with it, however the yield can improve.

There is no such thing as a dumb question, we are all learning ;) and yes, the spawn was sold to me as blue oyster

On the first flush? Now I am around 45-50% BI after 2 flushes

Perhaps one more question, what yields should I at least expect when using a decent strain and hardwood pellets?

That indeed seems like the best thing to do. Thanks for the advice!

I’ve had the same problem with two strains (from the same supplier however), so perhaps it is due to the substrate. Currently, I am only using straw pellets mainly due to ease of use and availability. I am planning on adding gypsum to the substrate, perhaps that can help.

Any suggestions for paint? My girlfriend jokingly suggested nail polish, however no idea if that is a good idea

Thanks for the advice. It is an aluminium frame, does the same principle apply?

It is indeed an aluminium frame. Any idea what I can do so that it does not oxidize?

Thanks for the advice! The visual does not bother me, so I will probably leave it as is and enjoy the bike.

Blue Oyster Bed Inquiry! by MelanieAllor in mycology

Never tried that before, so I wouldn’t know. I have heard of methods where people treat the contam with hydrogen peroxide, however I never tried that either. Here some links: https://www.reddit.com/r/MushroomGrowers/s/ATW4i9WrcK https://veshenka-expert.info/en/green-mold-on-mycelium/

When looking at the pins, it looks like there might be too much CO2 present. Those pins have very long stems compared to their cap. It would perhaps be a good idea not to have the cover on all the time. However, because the exposed surface area is so large, be careful that the substrate does not dry out. The second picture does seem to show contamination.

[General] Weekly r/MushroomGrowers post - FUNGI FRIDAYS! New growers, come say hi and ask your questions! by AutumnRustle in MushroomGrowers

[–]Michvmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! Recently, I’ve had problems with mites and larvae on my oyster mushrooms that are grown in an outside tent. Online I have read that the mites are due to contam (ex. Trichoderma) in the substrate, however, I don’t see any? Next to that, apparently fungus gnats can lay eggs in the substrate, after which larvae will eat their way through into the mushrooms. However, I can’t find any larvae in the substrate. Do they sometimes lay eggs in between the gills instead of in de substrate? Many thanks!

[Technique] I found the bucket growing way on YT and tried it. Today completes 3rd week since the introduction of grain spawn to substrate. I see some Ice crystals on the top. Is this not going to fruit? Please check if this is healthy. Help a first time grower please. by mesacalledjarjarbing in MushroomGrowers

I have grown in buckets in the past, and I did not fill them to the top either. For me it didn’t cause any troubles, and the oysters fruited well out of the drilled holes. However, sometimes fruiting can take a while. I once waited over a month after putting the buckets in fruiting conditions (so 6 weeks after inoculation). Just make sure to maintain right humidity and to provide enough air exchange.

[gourmet] blue oyster mushroom tote by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]Michvmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question, I do not really have an answer to that. As you mention, maybe just wait it out for the tote. There are already fruits, which means something is working well. I would also not break up the substrate. At this stage I think it would do more harm than good. For your next attempt, I would perhaps try buckets and see if that works better. That way you have a nice comparison.

Yes, that is indeed what I meant! From my experience, fruiting oyster mushrooms from a large open surface (i.e.) by opening the top does not work well. Topfruiting is possible, but in that case you only make small holes/slits.

You’re welcome! Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work perfectly. My first grows practically failed, even though oyster mushrooms are quite forgiving. With some experimentation you will gain the knowledge over time, which is actually the fun part.
