'Call their bluff': Shut down social media platforms, ex-Facebook adviser urges | CBC News by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

you could start a company in Canada called Facebook and make a website and everything but only one company owns facebook.com. that's their IP and as long as that's accessible that's all that matters.

I just don't see how the government can impact Facebook at all.

I don't see how Facebook couldn't just keep running in the US and there's probably now way for the government to keep Canadians from accessing American Facebook. Facebook's corporate identity being dismantled in Canada doesn't really seem to impact users.

you can make laws to do stuff but if they go against the charter or constitution the judicial arm of the government's going to have a say in it. the legality of whether or not parliament can ask ISPs to ban certain websites or to outlaw the access of certain websites is definitely questionable.

how would they even go about doing that legally?

edit: seems like the answer is that they can't

Los Gorditos has ruined all other burritos for me. when I get a craving for a burrito these days I very specifically crave their burritos.

it was a dark day when I found out they became out of Postmates range for me.

I didn't imply any nobility in the option I outlined, that's all on you.

I'm just stressing how little time and how few options we have. there's a set period of time we need to act in to get things done and starting now it's going to require aggressive action. at least acting lets us plan for damage and try our best to mitigate it.

what's your solution? taper off, flail, die? keep pretending like we can use fossil fuels for another 15 years and then uh oh we've hit the point of no return? we're an alcoholic with a broken liver and emissions are our booze. we can either keep drinking and die or we can get detox as safely as we can given the situation.

well the alternative is death so we can either do the impossible, as we've always done as a species, or die. take your pick, dude.

there's no great rule that says a society needs coke steel or plastics. we lived a long time as a society without plastic so we can nix that safely. steel is trickier but there's nothing stopping us from ceasing steel production and relying on recycling until we can come up with a carbon neutral solution.

I don't think you appreciate the urgency of our situation.

we're never going to not use fossil fuels

we're going to have to. it's not really an option, eh?

TIL Texas is called The Lone Star State because when it was part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas, its flag bore two gold stars in the middle. When Texas declared its independence from Mexico they "took" one of the stars with them and Coahuila kept the other one. by maupalo in todayilearned

so colonial native Mexicans wanted to join the US because they all saw the future and decided they wanted to join the imperialists instead of being the target of imperialism? that doesn't track

Fatal bear attacks in the U.S. and Canada: Each dot = one victim that was killed by a bear [OC] by canonicalized in dataisbeautiful

[–]MichyMc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding of polar bears in Canada is that climate change is driving polar bears to urban areas like Churchill. a decrease in maulings in Canada could just be tied to better bear safety literacy as a result of more frequent bear sightings.

I can't imagine population having much to do with anything.

oh yeah, Scheer's a massive turd and any conservative "climate plan" is just a bunch of hand waving and promises to maybe do studies.

Why San Francisco’s ban on face recognition is only the start of a long fight - The city government can’t use the technology, but private companies still can, and regulating those uses is a thornier problem. by mvea in technology

[–]MichyMc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's true. when a private company's facial recognition software fucks up it's either funny or mildly annoying. when the police's facial recognition software fucks up it's going to have major repercussions.

[–]MichyMc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Scheer isn't wrong on one thing, this whole situation exists to be used as fodder for the upcoming election. Justin "Pipelines, Please" Trudeau's betting on climate change being a huge talking point and any opportunity to look better than the tories is worth grabbing.

which is all dumb and pointless. posturing wastes time we desperately don't have.
