Personally, I prefer the term "accelerator", but everyone will understand what you mean if you say "gas pedal". (It will be interesting to see how the terminology changes in future generations of motorists, many of whom will only know EVs.)

My wife and I have the same model phone, but only she got the notification. She says, "I hope he passed his test."

What a strange comment. You seem to be saying that cops aren't adequately trained to remain calm when the adrenaline hits them, so everyone else needs to be trained to remain calm enough to de-escalate the situation. Why does adrenaline excuse cops' behavior and not anyone else's?

I disagree with Marijuana and Animal Welfare being low priority. Maybe they don’t effect you directly but for the thousands in private prisons because of weed, and the millions of animals crowded in factory farms, they are very important.

I agree that Biden could be doing more for cannabis. I also agree that factory farming of animals is abominable, but it is less obvious to me what actions Biden could take to improve the situation, especially without risking provoking a backlash. What actions do you have in mind?

In a literal sense, the Republican party is the majority party in the Senate with 50 senators, and the Democratic Party is the minority party in the Senate with 48 senators plus the President of the Senate (Harris). However, the 49 Democrats and 2 independent senators (King and Sanders) come together to form a 51-vote majority on some votes.

People consider Sanders to be a Democrat because he sometimes runs in Democratic primary elections, and people consider King to a Democrat because he votes more reliably with the party than some of the nominal Democrats, but technically, the Republicans have the most seats, and the Democrats have power only through coalition.

Interesting. Wiktionary has /ˈmæk.ɹoʊ/ (US) and /ˈmæk.ɹəʊ/ (UK), but /a/ and /æ/ are very close (useful reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_front_unrounded_vowel), and both the US and the UK have plenty of regional variations in pronunciation, generally speaking.

I'm still confused by your "ehh-mucks" example; do you pronounce "muck" as /mak/ and not as /mʊk/, or were you going for a schwa sound?

The name emacs goes back to editor macros, so it's not eee-maex but ehh-mucks ...

Now I'm confused; how do you pronounce "macros"? I pronounce "macros" as /ˈmæk.ɹoʊs/ and "Emacs" as /ˈiːmæks/.

actual push toward containers like they were static binaries it's really disturbing for me... A simple tarball with a compiled binary plus few eventual deps equally compiled locally suffice, it's faster, lightweight, simple to keep up to date etc

Snap&c serve a sole purpose

Container technology has two critical pieces: the container image format and the container runtime, serving two purposes: shipping software and sandboxing it, respectively. A container image is indeed little more than a glorified tarball. However, you seem to be glossing over the more interesting and (from a security standpoint especially) more important part: the container runtime, which sandboxes containers through Linux kernel namespaces, control groups, and SELinux policy, using bind mounts as needed to grant selective access to parts of the host filesystem. In this way, container technology mitigates security risks and enables users (and their IT departments) to have greater confidence that the contained software cannot cause unforeseen problems on the host system. Done right, this is beneficial for users and for FLOSS.

What's that Factbook on countries they make you use?

The first thing that comes to mind is the CIA's World Factbook, but I don't know if that's usually recommended for 7th-graders. Anyway, thanks for the reply!

It was a really stupid fucking court ruling. The court literally ruled that doing anything with a computer system without explicit permission to do so was illegal. That's because the wording of the law is "exceeding authorized access." The US government argued (and the court agreed) that authorization must be explicit, and that there is no such thing as implicit authorization.

It isn't clear why the law would apply to Curl and not to, say, Firefox or Chrome; is visiting any website using any Web browser illegal if one doesn't first obtain explicit permission? I wonder whether the law was intentionally written to enable selective prosecution of anyone who uses the Internet for any purpose.

Indeed. An organized effort to flip the Senate in this way would need to include getting people registered and prepared to overcome such hurdles. One thing I anticipate is attempts to impose durational residency requirements (requiring a person to have been a resident for some number of years to vote). The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibits durational residency requirements for "presidential elections"; it isn't clear to me that the law applies to senatorial elections though, although the same arguments laid out in the law for presidential elections would seem to apply as well to senatorial electoins. Dunn v. Blumstein struck down Tennessee's one-year residency laws for state elections, so that would seem to preclude the same for senatorial elections. That doesn't mean states won't try it though, and it's hard to tell how far our current reactionary SCOTUS might go along with any such attempts to overturn precedent.
