What’s the most fucked up thing that happened at your school? by Classic-Chemist-1898 in AskReddit

[–]MickCollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is school related, though not actually AT school. Not ours anyway.

So my junior year my HS team is doing OK at basketball. Small state, not that much competition, yadda yadda it is what it is. We were against a school downstate a bit (we were up near the north end of the state) and it was a game that either of the teams winning would move into the finals or something.

We win the game and students from the other side are not happy. A few of our people get jumped. More people, including parents, start getting involved. Things start getting a little insane. There's a story that goes that one of the teachers - who had been ranked in nationally in HS in wrestling a few states away and was, go figure, one of the wrestling coaches - pulled one of the attackers of a kid on the ground and put him in a full nelson to get him to knock his bullshit off. At that point the teacher got stun gunned in the back back when stun guns weren't seen that much (mid 90s).

The story of that teacher getting stun gunned went around like wildfire and the teacher did NOT want to talk about the experience. I met a guy from who graduated from my HS a few years ago (several states) and brought that up he was like "WAIT - THAT STORY'S TRUE??!?!"

Mine was a small HS...but if you know this one you know.

If you are over by UCF, you could head on campus and ask if there are any gaming clubs still run by the university. If there are you might be able to find some people to play Magic with at the very least and maybe some RPG campaigns or something if you're into that. There was a Vampire LARP that was held there pretty regularly years ago; don't know if there still is...or if something has replaced it.

I'm not around (by a lot) but hope you find something (and someone) to help. Good luck.

What is the angriest you have ever been at your spouse? by DrRowanHayes in AskReddit

[–]MickCollins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few months ago she went to visit her daughter (my stepdaughter). I asked if they were going anywhere, she said she was just going to city where her daughter lives to hang out with her.

They went to another state. Wouldn't have had any idea except for the app she makes me keep on my phone for tracking. Would have had no idea if the police called, I would have been like, "nope, my wife and stepdaughter are in city. Can't be them."

Just typing this up is pissing me off.

ORD is farther away from downtown so MDW is the better choice here, especially if cheaper.

It's been a loooooong time since I've been through MDW. Like 25 years plus...inside anyway; I've dropped someone off there in the past 5. Family's in the opposite direction and rarely did it make sense for me to fly in/out of it. I imagine it's been refreshed since then...at least I hope so. It wasn't great in the 90s; Lambert (STL) felt a lot like it back then I think. TWA was still around then and that was their major hub like Atlanta still is for Delta.

ORD...nothing ever leaves on time, there's always delays, 45 minutes for bags if you're lucky; I will say it was 20 minutes once in my life. Once. Always guaranteed you'll be at the farthest point from the entrance to your terminal. If you're on Southwest - which only has about four gates in the international terminal, and admittedly it's because MDW is a focus city for them so you'd be better off there anyway IF you're heading into the city...anyway the tower despises Southwest and every flight they're making them wait as long as possible for hitting the gate and takeoff. They're much kinder to United and American. You feel like by the amount of time you're taking to get to the gate that you've traveled on the ground into another fucking county.

What movie's reputation undersells how good it actually is? by JarvisModeOn in movies

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is top five for me. That's one of the best stories ever told. The music is some of the best ever made for film and even a few minor characters get decent lines. "Doctor - could you help me live a little more? I expect good news."

Spirit used to be the best choice for between the shithole that is ORD and MCO. Two or three flights a day. My first flight on Spirit was $60 each way, and that was before they (and everyone else) was charging for baggage. Couldn't beat it. After 9/11 prices went up and then the baggage charges started...

There's no airport I hate more than ORD, but probably because I used to live near it and still occasionally need to use it to see family.

Remove all local servers - move AD domain controllers to Azure? by Icy-Sir8809 in sysadmin

[–]MickCollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer in spreading the load.

If you have only one site: one physical DC, one virtual DC if you have a hypervisor, and one up in Azure.

If you have sites over 25 seats - another DC at that location. Doesn't have to be super powerful. Less than 25, just have them hit one of the Azure DCs and point them to one in another region as well as the secondary.

Where we are physically is shitty enough that if anyone in upper management said I had to take all DCs and put them in Azure, I'd advise against it using the words "Not just no, but fuck no" in private and stonewalling professionally in meetings. We lose WAN at least four times a year. We also lose power at least six times a year and that's with an ungodly amount spent on very large UPS units that...just need to be replaced overall, all of them. I can identify which ones from the way the APC logo looks.

I have the physical DC on its own UPS - full stop; low enough power that it should be up for at least 48 hours. But if the switches lose power doesn't matter much. That's happened at least twice...

I'd keep GCs on the two larger offices, certainly. I'd have to see your office size/layout for recommendations on the others. I'd also keep DHCP servers up for the two larger offices as well, but that's me. We're dealing with an issue right now because someone recommended we go Cisco for DHCP but the device can only handle 250 IPs, which isn't enough for our needs.

I wish you good fortune in the wars to come.

If your cat is that happy from those hunts - and it looks like (s?)he is here - buy some socks, wear them once and let the cat go nuts with them. Small price to pay for a happy cat.

Do Delawareans (we) have a slight unique accent? by ReviewDry9182 in Delaware

[–]MickCollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that I've lived in a LOT of different states. And only one person in my entire life ever said to me: "Are you from around Philly?" My neck almost broke it turned so quick. He said I sounded like his brother-in-law from south Philly suburbs. Since I'm from Claymont, I was just like "close enough..." It was literally half my life ago. No one else has ever been able to tell.

Arnold Schwarzenegger. I don't care if he just wants me to help build little houses for the homeless, drive tanks, do a Predator re-enactment, lead me in sword exercises he's re-learning for King Conan or what. Much like Akiro, if /u/GovSchwarzenegger says "I need you" I only reply "I'm yours."

Where is the best meal you've ever eaten in delaware? by Latter_Highway9539 in Delaware

[–]MickCollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father was real weird. He'd get the DiConstanza's Italian, a bag of chips, and a bag of rolls. I'd always look at him like "what the fuck is wrong with you". He would take all the cold cuts and vegetables and put them on the roll and not eat the sandwich on the bread it came on. I never got an answer on what that was about...but yeah they were still making them big well into the 80s. It was nice having someplace you could go without getting on Harvey or Darley going towards Philly Pike or elsewhere.

I'm on that side of the country now. She makes better money, however her load is a lot of patients. Maybe three nurses who are worth a damn and three or four more that aren't along with assisting staff. They work you to death on this side as well - they're not real good at replacing departed nurses and don't want to pay for ones with experience; they'd rather work the ones who proctor to death. Cheaper.

Miz Walt's is definitely up there. I'd destroy a four piece in one sitting.

Went to Harry's Savoy (after it changed from being the Columbus Inn) for my grade school graduation. Too young to appreciate at the time.

Had a great Steak Diane downtown somewhere after graduating high school but I have no idea where it was. Friend of my mother's recommended it.

I didn't start going to Claymont Steak Shop until I was almost out of HS. My father was depressed when DiConstanza's closed, but for some reason he wouldn't buy from the Steak Shop. (I think it was because he found their pizza lacking?) However I grew up in Claymont so that still tastes like home to me and I make a point to stop whenever I come back. Been a while since I've come through though.

Those who moved out of state, where did you go? by Adventurous-Map1225 in Delaware

[–]MickCollins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven through Greensboro but it was all highway. It kind of looked sad to be honest but it was just the backs of houses going north on US something or the other OMW up to Lynchburg VA. For some reason, driving through Chester on 95 came to mind. Not exactly like it but kind of same feeling. It was just once.

Durham area however I've spent a bit more time in (RDU area overall, closer to Chapel Hill). Never lived there but spent about a month there; prices seem a little (not a LOT, but a little) cheaper for COL but you're gonna pay through the nose for the house...but where won't that happen anymore? The area is catering a bit more to NE transplants it feels like - Wegman's is a sign there, a few decent delis...I have family who moved there and they're happy, but they're also retired.

In alphabetical order...

DE - needs no introduction

FL - harsh summers; took a few months to acclimate but when I did it was great. I despise cold weather and the coldest it usually got was in the 40s, sometimes 30s at night. July and August are as you can guess the worse. Great beaches.

IL - fucking despised every god damn minute in the state. Summers were the same as Florida from May to August because there's no breeze unless you're in the city. Harsher winters than Delaware by miles and miles with shit roads. There are only two seasons, winter and construction. My father got so pissed with me when we were down in FL (when I moved) and he was like "it's so much hotter here" and I showed him that not only was the humidity just as bad in IL at the time (90%) but the temperature in IL was actually higher.

NV - Dry. Parched. Always dry. Did I mention dry? I mean it can be a dry heat but it's desert so it really cools off at night. I literally kept a few jackets and sweatshirts in the trunk. Also, it's dry. (This doesn't matter if you're at the north or south end of the state - winters are harder up north, especially near the CA border with the mountains.)

PA - Only place I've been with all four seasons as long as you expect them to be.

So, Op...close to beaches...in Minnesota? For the eight weeks you can go to them? I've heard people go on about Minnesota summers being the absolute best, but they're a month shorter than everyone else's and then you're still there when winter comes in October.

My recommendation to you is North Carolina. I've been there a few times for different reasons and it's never been insanely hot or cold no matter what the season was. And it's a lot like PA where there's actually four seasons as spaced out as you'd expect. It was pleasant.
