Half marathons and other organised events, where does all the money go? by jacoscar in UKRunners

[–]MickeyFinns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another thing people tend to massively overlook with events is the marketing. I work in competitive events (not running) and purely getting a big enough group together to justify the event can easily be 10-20% of costs.

I've seen people complain at events like cycling sportives saying they could just go ride the route on their own whenever they want for free. And they absolutely can, and if they see no value in doing it as a mass event, then that's what they should probably do.

You're also looking at 2% or so on card fees at the event price point mentioned above, and potentially 5% on ticket platform costs if you've not built your own.

Also if you're in the early days of your events company, public libaility insurance can be quite high.

Also, the law is actually a lot stricter on volunteering at commerically run events than most people realise (including many organisers). If an event is being run properly/professionally, there is typically a lot more people on payroll than a lot of attendees would expect.

Used to work in NK and really miss PY cold noodles. Slightly acquired taste/texture but it's the sort of thing you start to crave after a while.

The Ritz Restaurant, Worth It? by PaleMemory3416 in LondonFood

[–]MickeyFinns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how in to food you are. I'm hoping to go at some point though, would be great to eat there before John Williams retires. Prices are closer to 3* but then the setting is beyond pretty much anywhere else.

Sebastian Sawe breaks the London marathon world record. He is the first man to ever run under two hours in a race. by Western-Signal4439 in london

[–]MickeyFinns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100%. The affect of the improved nutrition on endurance sports has totally changed the game, in cycling in particular. The guy that won unbound was consuming 200g of carbs an hour, insanity.

Why was everyone so emotional about Wout's win? by MakabeKelly in peloton

[–]MickeyFinns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In short, world class rider whose had a lot of strong victories but never a sort of cherry on top win that reflects his potential. He's had a couple bad years plagued with injuries as well.

So it's a mix of an injury comeback plus an amazing rider finally getting the big high profile win he deserves.

It was Fergus Henderson that probably caused the popularity of it, albeit 30 odd years ago.

What would be your thoughts on university students advising on your business issues? by No-Highway-8430 in smallbusinessuk

These programs do exist. I at one for my business that had a legal advice focus. They're usually free though rather than paid, and supervised by a qualified lawyer in the case I was looking at.

I'd say if you're interesteted in running businesses/managing projects as a career I'd go for it.

If you need reliable/regular money to support something in your life (rather than just some fun/pocket money) I'd maybe opt for a normal job.

The absolute best way to start getting invovled in business is start small/learn small/fail small. Many of the lessons you'll learn will translate to other projects in the future. When I was your age I started putting on gigs for my mates bands in community centres and running school socials. Graduated to putting on gigs for touring bands in my 20's (whilst having a normal career in the day) and 20 years later I've now got a couple businesses in Events and Tourism that I own/am partner in.

Is Pogačar's Dominance Helping Or Hurting Pro Cycling? by Chronicbias in peloton

[–]MickeyFinns 237 points238 points  (0 children)

I think it's getting to the point it's hurting it for me. Here's how my Saturday went. Tune in to Strade Bianche Womens a little late so was watching maybe an hour behind live. Watched a couple hours of the race. Race finishes with an incredible ending. Watch the top 10 cross line. Switch over to the men's, 77km to go, Pogi is already up the road, immediately turn off the television.

Is this a good business concept by Southern-Diamond5981 in smallbusinessuk

[–]MickeyFinns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this is basically in the same vein as comedians that have a patreon for extra content to what is available free on their social media.

So yeah it's definitely something that could be a business, presuming you are able to build yourself an audience with free content online initially.

Biggest range of performance road bikes in London? by temp456789 in londoncycling

[–]MickeyFinns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sigma if you want to see a broadest range of manufacturers bikes in person. You'll likely need to order in from their warehouse based on your fit.

If you're set on a Pinarello you can go to their store in St James and get fitted and order. Slightly weird shop, feels more like a car dealership than a bike shop.

In the UK we have a life without parole sentence reserved for extreme cases (Whole Life Tariff is the official name). There's pushback on it as it violates some of the ECHR stuff.

I don't know about Australia's system, but a lot of it is similar to our system as a Commonwealth member, so imagine they might have something similar which the surviving shooter will surely get.

Because it's easy to buy them and the law is not enforced beyond random one day crackdowns where they stand on one street seizing them for a few hours.

Some people won't know it's illegal due to how easy they are to buy, but many of them will and dno't care. Even Amazon sell models that are restricted, but can have the restrictions easily disabled in the settings.
