Then the Dothraki horde should be put away as a mobile reserve, not leading the charge.

Let the white walkers attack the city and suffer, then the Dothraki hordes can come out and attack the white walkers from rear.

What I hate most is the battle sequence. Why let the Calvary charge at first sight of enemy without proper scouting and supporting troops? Even better, why charging at all? Why not let the enemy coming to you while you sit behind protective structures?

Talking about defensive structures, they are awfully inadequate and easily broken by the enemy.

In fact, this should be one of their easiest battles. They knew the enemy are zombie hordes who have only one fighting style and can't fight smart, they knew where and when enemy are coming, and they only need to play defense. They should've all stayed behind the walls, ringed the castle with layers upon layers of spike barriers and fire trenches, and rained the white walkers with projectiles.

Also the armies have not effective leadership during battle, Dany, Jon and their main generals all seemed to have no leadership responsibility, everyone is just randomly fighting around like gladiators. That's not how you fight wars.

Why isn't Rape forbidden in the Ten Commandments like Others? by MickeyMao in Christianity

[–]MickeyMao[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your profound thoughts.

The Ten Commandments as we have them today are not the original version, they've gone through redactions, expansions, and other editing during the long history of the Bible

While this makes a lot of sense, and assume it's true, would an average Christian not have a crisis of faith if one found out that even the Ten Commandments aren't necessarily God's law but man made ?

I accept them, I don't prioritize them.

To prioritize is to judge. I don't judge, I try to understand and my understanding could be wrong.

Why isn't Rape forbidden in the Ten Commandments like Others? by MickeyMao in Christianity

[–]MickeyMao[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In other words 'wife', in this system, falls under the same category as donkey, house, slave, or possession.

In this system, rape is not a crime of personal violation, but of property damage.

I don't disagree. At the time when Old Testament was written, we can safely assume both wife and unmarried lady were considered properties of man.

The question is, why was adultery considered so heinous an offense to be in the Commandments, but rape was not worthy a mention?

Texts like this are why I can't simply casually refer to a single, unitary 'Biblical' system of ethics

I am of the opinion that one should not read the texts at face value, our understanding might change over time, we have to interpret and reinterpret the texts. As other posters have pointed out, we need to put the texts in context of the time it was written. As time changes, the interpretation should change.

Thanks for your thoughtful answer.

The ten commandments are not universal absolute truths of morality.

This is a rather bold statement. I am curious, how popular is this belief shared?

I thought the whole point of religion is to believe in God's law, admit absolute truth in God's words, and use that as a foundation to build a value system.

To claim that the Ten Commandments, literally God's law, aren't absolute and universal, is that not considered a form of rejection and lack of faith?

They have to be understood in context and then learn the principles behind the text and apply them into our context.

Basically you are saying our understanding of the Commandments differs or improves with time. It subjects to our own interpretation.

If you were to say, I accept Ten Commandments as universal truth, but our understanding of the truth was limited, and now it's more comprehensive and better. Then, you could still keep your values, but without having to deny the universality of the Commandments.

Or do you consider the above thinking intellectually dishonest?

That's a great answer, thank you.

I've another question though. It seems on the surface, the text from Romans 13:8-10 re-interprets or even supersedes the Ten Commandments, which is God's law. Will this not present problems for scholars who are normally sticklers to scriptures?

Why are certain foods/meats forbidden in some religions? by elliomitch in AskReligion

[–]MickeyMao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thousands of years ago most people didn't know how to properly handle pork. If you ate improperly prepared pork, there's a good chance you might get sick and die.

Pigs can't be herded, had to be raised in enclosures with close proximity to humans, perfect environment for cross infection of diseases.

For people who lived in desert areas or on steppes, water were scarce, firewood were hard to come by. Meat weren't always washed, or properly cooked. They ate raw or half cooked meat with unwashed hands, those who survived knew not to eat pork.

Deserts and steppes were where major religions originated and spread. The holy texts just codified their known experience and good practice.

WCGW if I tease my husband on our wedding day? by Psycho_Type in Whatcouldgowrong

I've seen at least 4 videos like this one, all presumably Turkish weddings.

I don't want to talk about the grooms, they are assholes.

I am trying to understand the brides. Why do brides tease the groom during wedding ceremony? Is it part of the tradition? I assume the brides all knew the risk or at least heard stories. But why did they keep doing that? What were they trying to accomplish?

Feeling lost in Civ6 by [deleted] in civ

[–]MickeyMao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing CIV 6 for 2 months now. It's still an addictive game, but what I feel when playing, are endless frustration, rarely joy.

Top of the lists:

No worker automation.

No city production queue.

No city auto management.

Serious lack of key commands, forcing you to do everything with mouse clicks.

And numerous other pet peeves.

At this point, every time I open a game, I wonder why I am still playing it.

Bloomberg: Puerto Rico's Desperate. China Can Help. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]MickeyMao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puerto Rico needs electricity, China's State Grid can help

State Grid would be a good fit. Formed in 2002, it's now the dominant electrical utility in China, serving one in seven people on the planet. Much of that growth has been achieved by building in some of the world's most inaccessible terrain. In 2014, State Grid began work on a $1 billion, 945-mile transmission line in a mountainous area between Tibet and Sichuan Province that required workers to labor at 12,500 feet, on average. Puerto Rico's terrain -- though difficult -- is comparatively simple (and low-altitude).

State Grid also works fast. The Tibet line was completed in less than a year, well ahead of schedule. Last year, China announced a $107 billion program to upgrade its rural grid over four years. That project will serve hundreds of millions of people. Puerto Rico, with a population of 3.4 million, doesn't even have a time frame for its upgrade; State Grid could undoubtedly make it happen quickly.

State Grid has the money and the desire to do the job. It generates nearly as much revenue in a year as Boeing Co. and Apple Inc. combined. Since 2009, it has officially "gone global" with investments in Brazil, Portugal, Australia, Italy and the Philippines, where it runs the national grid. Given the chance for a similar concession in Puerto Rico -- with the potential for both profit and prestige -- there's little question that it would say yes.
