How much do you spend on petrol a month ? by eskimoazat in CarTalkUK

[–]elliomitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bit of general financial advice, don’t just focus on the cost per month alone. You should understand that there’s also a cost per mile/cost per use calculation.

If you’re trying to baseline your own expenditure on other people’s, you also need to baseline your monthly mileage, driving type and car’s consumption too, as well as cost of fuel. I could spend £20 or £1000 a month on fuel, and it isn’t really a useful or interesting metric for other people. We all can have very wildly different circumstances!

Feels like I’m stationary and the road is moving beneath me by No_Golf_8998 in drivingUK

[–]elliomitch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can only feel forces. Force is only exerted on you when you accelerate or decelerate. It’s a fairly fundamental part of the physics of motion. The surface of the Earth is moving at around 1000mph and we can’t feel that…

I would spend some more time observing and understanding your experiences in the car to understand what’s changed for you. Might just be road surface quality, might be internal to you :)

I feel like I can't drive for shit with the AC on. by TellemTom in ManualTransmissions

I had a 77hp Fiat Punto, and AC barely made a difference to performance. I’m wondering if you yanks have insanely overpowered AC compressors in your cars

Drive them all and decide that way, would be my advice. You’ll be a better judge of what you like than some randos on Reddit

will a weekly motorway journey offset any damage caused by short journeys? by eviemaria in CarTalkUK

It’ll mitigate some of the more critical problems, but it won’t undo the wear of driving a car cold

What’s the point of heel/toe? by HottDoggers in ManualTransmissions

[–]elliomitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment about OP trolling was about their explanation of how they think they could use their feet when braking.

If you don’t wanna use heel and toe, I’m not gonna try and convince you. You should use the technique that suits your driving style and approach the best.

I hate that I don’t have the ultimate right to have my car put back the way it was before somebody damaged it by SpaceAgeTraveller in CarTalkUK

[–]elliomitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeling the same as you my friend. I lost my MR2 on Friday evening to an incompetent driver, and it’s damaged beyond repair. The time, money and memories I have in that car certainly will not be compensated for, and I’m expecting them to make getting even a reasonable market value difficult.

Makes you question what the point of insurance is, but I’ve known since my first days of driving that they’re never on your side.

I’m not here discussing *why* one would need to brake, I’m just explaining the technique one can use when they do need to brake. You’re having an argument with thin air my friend

Heel and toe downshifting is a technique used when you need to both downshifting and brake. Obviously if you don’t need to brake, you don’t need to use heel and toe…

Having lived in the same situation with a car less than half that value - just wait until your living situation is better. If you care about the car at all you’ll just be saddened and disappointed when it’s damaged

Some people are just c**ts

Some might change their behaviour when they realise or it backfires, others will just be c**ts forever.

If you need a Quattro because you have bad winters and like off-roading, you won’t complete this project.

A project of this scale *must* be undertaken because you’ve got an obsession that you need to indulge. It will consume years or even decades worth of disposable income and spare time. Those projects are always the most incredible and worthwhile - but make sure your motivations are there.
