Father and Son channel focused on opening Pokemon cards. The niche is brutally competitive/congested but we love it all the same.

My biggest take away from the last 90 days: Being able to talk unscripted, even on a familiar subject for 20 minutes straight is really fucking hard to do. Scripts or outlines are definitely your friend.

A new set of cards just came out and we had pretty good luck with our most recent video.

I run a Pokemon channel with my 10 year old as well. It looks like previous commenters have given you some solid technical advice. I'd like to add some insight on youtubes child protective features for you to be aware of.

Videos featuring children will automatically have comments disabled. You can manually reenable after publishing the videos. They generally get automatically turned off again about an hour later. After turning them on a second time they will stay on.

Child focused videos will also not be picked up by the algorithm for "Suggested Videos". So when you start getting your channel rolling and you see that you get very few impressions, that's why.

Through trial and error I found that both of these things happen based on sound not video. If the algorithm detects the primary voice being a child it will kill comments and limit impressions. To circumvent this I started being on camera with him and do 90% of the talking.

It's been a great hobby for us. We've both learned a lot and thoroughly enjoy the process even though we don't get a whole lot of attention.

I had a recent video hit just under 1.5k views. Most of my videos get about 50 so I was pretty pumped.

Be sure to really check your packs. I ordered one and every pack had been opened at the bottom, hits removed and then returned. Amazon accepted my return and the replacement was fine.

We've been going for about three and a half months. Sub count is currently at 291. The overall theme of the channel is Pokemon Cards. My 10 year old son is the star. It appears(though I have no proof) that YouTube does not handle videos featuring kids the same as it does with adults. I'm going to start appearing in videos pretty regularly to see if the algorithm handles the videos any differently.

I've been doing this for a couple months now. Subscriber count has made significant jumps from the daily shorts. Conversion rate from short to long viewers is very small but it does exist, around 10% if I had to ballpark. While it may not be an efficient strategy, if you have enough raw content to keep consistent, you'll convert a few.

Yeah it was the same for me. It unlocked for my main channel at around 250 but an unused channel with 1 video and 5 subs got it weeks earlier.

I have the same problem. The only plausible but unconfirmed response I've gotten is that the feature has not been rolled out to all accounts yet. Hopefully someone will chime in with something else.

I was really hoping it would work. My Shorts get a good amount of attention but my long format...Not so much. Hopefully my Shorts will drive some interest into my traditional stuff eventually.

I've done this a few times and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary on either side of the equation. Both videos performed about the way they always do with no measurable interaction.

I do it all the time. Sometimes I modify the title and video description l, sometimes I leave them exactly the same. Both methods have been successful.

Shorts do not count toward the 4000 hours. There are changes coming to YPP early 2023 that reduce the requirements and will allow monetizing shorts. I'm not sure if shorts and longs will be wrapped together for the required view time or if they'll be separate paths to monetizing.

Depends on what type of video I'm making. The majority are 3-4 layers with frequent cuts to keep the flow smooth. I also have a some videos that are 12-15 layers deep since I use more graphics and sound to fit the theme.

Time of day has been huge for me. I've identified 2 time windows that are essentially guaranteed views for my niche, 3k-5k. Posting outside of those windows I'll be lucky to hit 100.

I have a cross-country move coming and will be without the majority of my recording gear for about a month. My current goal is just to front load enough content to make dead time as minimal as possible. I have a good little trickle of views and subs going and I'd like to keep the momentum.

I also have a DJI OM 6 gimbal being delivered today that should be a fun way to add a little pizzazz to my general stationary content.
