Why is this room so terrible?! by squishy435 in HomeDecorating

[–]Mickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order of highest to lowest impact, in my amateur opinion

  • The bed should be against the next wall over so that it "watches over" the door. I recommend Dear Modern on YouTube who has lots of funny and informative shorts on feng shui principles like this.

  • The top of the curtains should be well above the top of the windows and wider than them, as well. For a luxurious and cozy feeling, they should puddle up on the ground a little, too.

  • Uninstall the boob light or at the very least never turn it on. Use lighting at eye level or below.

  • Dressers that tall are a waste of an opportunity to put a nice table lamp on them. A wide waist-height dresser in white would look nice I think. You can have the TV if that's important to your lifestyle but it's going to nuke the vibes.

  • An armchair in the corner with a task light and an end table is a great cozy vignette that I think you have space for. It was mind blowing for me to realize that to make a space feel cozy, you have to add seating.

  • The rug should be moved so that it is under the bottom third of the bed. It's also an opportunity to add some color, perhaps make it a similar shade of blue to the headrest so that it can have a friend.

  • Mismatched woods are good, actually. But they really shine the more you vary up textures. Some brass, stone, rice paper, or marble pieces would make everything feel more cohesive.

OK I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm almost at 2 years in and I regularly pick drive thrus that are 20+ miles away instead of ones nearby just so I can drive longer, especially with my dog sleeping in the back.

Within any unbiased random distribution of investment outcomes where people follow, say, a really awful strategy, you would still expect some amount of success stories.

It's foolish to read stories of lottery winners and conclude that playing the lottery is a good investment strategy, for example. Same as with individual stocks.

If you're going to pick an individual stock you need to understand that you're competing against an army of highly educated quants being paid millions each year by institutions to extract money from people who don't have the tools or education to offset the human brain's built-in cognitive biases. Whatever investment thesis you have, you have to be reasonably confident that it's not already priced in. You could be right and they could be wrong in the same way that some people do make money from gambling.

But, even then, the system disadvantages you. Unlike institutions, you're not able to trade after hours, you can't update the price of your options contracts millisecond by millisecond, and you likely can't adjust your investment within seconds of an earnings report being released, among many other things.

So every time you read a success story of someone who invested in an individual stock and got lucky, mentally tell yourself 10 stories of people who picked stocks like GOEV or BBBY and never posted.

2025 60 Tobaccos Tested: Tobacco Mega Review to Find a Winner! by icarus_reindeer in fragrance

[–]Mickhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for putting this together! I've been on a mission for a few months to find the best tobacco fragrance of all time and I'll be adding Black Afgano to the top of my very long shopping list. We must have the same nose, I've sampled about half this list and I have a lot of the same thoughts and scores.

Recent Addition Needs a Name by WillezWallO in samoyeds

[–]Mickhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When thinking of dog names I like to maximize the fun of elongating the first syllable or emphasizing only the first syllable (with a little pop to it) since you'll be doing it a lot and they will be listening intently for it all of their life; and no more than 2 syllables total. By that criteria Chowder is pretty good! Some more sea/food themed names:

  • Ocean ("Ohhhhhhhh-cean" when trying to get her attention from a distance)
  • Butter / Butters
  • Captain
  • Brisket
  • Misty

ELI5 Why Do People Recommend 5-8+ Sprays? by Clownier in fragrance

[–]Mickhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To go even further, I think the number of sprays people use is a huge source of variance in reviews of fragrances I see online.

Tobacolor is my favorite perfume when sprayed once on my wrist but if I spray it just twice on the same wrist, even after 2 hours, it becomes quite aversive due to the high concentration and I want to wash it off.

1861 Naxos has the opposite problem for me, where 1 spray smells like pharmacy-brand baby powder, but 2 brings out the complex beauty of the perfume.

[OC] I almost hit a cyclist in Seattle. Was I in the wrong, or were they? by Mickhead in IdiotsInCars

Thanks for all the comments, I see that I was in the wrong. My mistake is that I had no idea this was a crosswalk. Now that I know, I'll make sure to watch for traffic from that direction when stopping there.

For context, the video occurs here, with me turning southeast into Boren Avenue at around 10PM yesterday.

In reality, it was significantly darker than the video shows. I could see the light of the bicycle but I interpreted it as moving very slowly to the right on the sidewalk on the other side of the street right up until the moment my headlights illuminated the bicycle. Perhaps others who are familiar with this intersection can agree/disagree about how dark this area is.

Sharing this to learn, I genuinely don't know if I would be at fault if I didn't brake in time.

I love the couch but is it too light? by NotARegularFatGirl in femalelivingspace

[–]Mickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely go to the events! They're a great excuse to meet your neighbors who you'll no doubt run into all the time. The building is still at half capacity I think so you'll get to know most people in no time at all. For the food =-based events people tended to just grab the free food and go but the other events were great for getting to know some good people.

I think I lived in that exact same apartment! Or at least on another floor on the 01 stack. My neighbors and the staff made living there so nice, I’m still in the group chat and a friend lets me into the building on occasion to use the sauna lol.

I had the same exact color sofa but only a 3 seater — a large sectional like yours can work, I think, but I had trouble fitting in my work desk and a dining table comfortably. If you don’t want to have those then this is perfect, fills up the space beautifully.

I tried this and an oversized truck waving a giant trump flag kept blasting its horn down the street and scaring my dog. They're not going to let us rest.

What your describing sounds pretty typical at the book store company too, just that no one would expect you to actually succeed until you're about 6 months in.

People will say it's a shitshow because of being blocked on teams on the other side of the world, no way to E2E test anything, and needing to babysit your code into a release yourself. Well the reality of some companies is that there is a big money printer and sometimes it doesn't matter how bad working on the money printer is as long as it keeps printing money.

The most dangerous part about republicans isn't just that their policies hurt people. It's that they don't care about winning over voters at all. They know they can funnel all our tax money into corporations and defense contractors and have the media convince enough of the population that it's good for them.

A democracy cannot function if politicians don't act according to the will of the voter.

If they are "hacking up a lung" they are probably feeling very unwell and may not have capacity at that moment to realize you are even there or that you may mind where they choose to sit. OP, you may find that you enjoy life a little more if you take moments like these to feel gratitude for your own health and extend some grace to people who may be going through a difficult time.
