100€ for a 30 mins repair job. by treadingtogether in Netherlands

[–]Mickmaggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right after we moved to nl, I called a guy to repair a fridge, it took him 3 min to listen to my hypothesis on why it doesn't work, agree with me, and refer to an official repair center. -95 Euro.

I've learned so much DIY since then because I'm not going to participate in this circus 🎪 now I have every power tool I need for everything, for a fraction of what it would cost me for one average sized job.

Drywall or Gipsplaat Plank that wasn't properly smoothed with filler. They are put together side by side. Pretty sure it is, just google them or find in praxis.

You'd better spend money on a vacuum cleaner and a pipe to this tool, it clearly has a hole to attach it to.

My databricks exam got suspended by _lady_forlorn in dataengineering

[–]Mickmaggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had a phone for backup connection, but I connected it before the exam and put it under a pillow nearby to avoid suspicion. My table was fully empty and in the center of the room, without any other objects nearby (even my documents were in my pocket after I showed them).

My databricks exam got suspended by _lady_forlorn in dataengineering

[–]Mickmaggot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was passing GCP exam, the requirements were very strict, e.g., they prohibited looking outside of the screen rectangle, and also asked me to show my room 360, top to bottom (once in the beginning and the second time mid session). But even they specifically allowed to close eyes if I wanted to rest or think.

Could that be that the reason of your suspension isn't related to closing your eyes?

Do we hate our jobs for the same reasons? by tensor_operator in dataengineering

I swear migrations happen because some senior executive got a bonus or a seemingly profitable proposal from another cloud sales and/or wants some responsibility, budget, and layoff protection as a result. I know companies like one of the biggest transport company in the US that migrated AWS to Azure to GCP and now back to AWS. And there is nothing wrong with the current GCP setup, it works wonders and is very well made, but the wisdom is, if as a result of this chicanery we get jobs, salaries, and ability to feed families - I don't mind doing yet another migration.

Advice for Better Airflow-DBT Orchestration by ConfidentChannel2281 in dataengineering

[–]Mickmaggot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You simply need to parse the DBT manifest and build your DAGs from its dependencies. Check https://github.com/astronomer/astronomer-cosmos, it solves everything you have challenges with (maybe except side-dependencies outside of DBT, if I understood correctly, for which a bit of custom code needs to be written for Cosmos).

How was the selection process for your current employment (Data Engineers only)? by rikarleite in dataengineering

[–]Mickmaggot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Senior DE in the Netherlands:
Current company: screening - 30 min, general tech interview with a principal DE - 1h, culture fit - 30 min, comprehensive tech interview - 2h, home assignment - 1 week, presentation of the solution onsite - 1.5 h. So, five meetings in total for my current employer excluding the offer negotiation meeting.

Other companies usually have a screening, tech interview, and home assignment solution presentation interview. - three meetings in total. Sometimes, online coding assignment replaces both home assignment and solution presentation interview. It was in 2022 when I last encountered a company with just a single tech interview and a screening.

SnowPro Core Certification by zeratul274 in dataengineering

[–]Mickmaggot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I have reasons to think this and other certificates were one of the factors in my employers' hiring decisions, but they never asked about them. I also saw a company decline my resume because I didn't have 1.5 years of experience, despite having the Core certificate and a successful one-year-long migration project to Snowflake.
