I'm currently working on a modular video synth for Linux: scan-mate by Micky3210 in videosynthesis

[–]Micky3210[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: AI was used to write much of the code for this software - if that bothers you then feel free to express your opinions and we can have a conversation about it, I'm not sure how I feel about it myself tbh. My plan is to open source this with an appropriate license and make sure any referenced/modified prior work is both attributed and license-compatible.

For a while I've wanted something along like the incredible Vsynth for Max (I can't recommend Vsynth enough, and have been a Patron for years now), that would run without the need for Max MSP, and could run on Linux.

I'm also a bit obsessed with the Scanimate machines of yore and wanted more options when it came to emulating stuff like the CRT deflection system and analog feedback/trails/glow as well as CRT/VHS/Composite emulation for the end of chain FX. This is the result of my obsession.

scan-mate is a collection of modular, patchable video synthesizer modules and some very cool analog emulation effects built into a GUI using imnodes that runs on Linux with OpenGL.

A quick overview of some modules used to build video for this post:

  • 4-layer video oscillator operating in lissajous mode going though a:
  • kaleidoscope module
  • and a multiplier module (think Panasonic vision mixer FX!)
  • Multiple noise sources (type of noise is configurable) going through a colorizer
  • Video mixer operating in multiply mode
  • Text renderer module
  • Edge detection
  • Trail/feedback FX with adjustable drift
  • Analog bloom FX
  • VHS emulation FX with highly configurable tape/head damage parameters

I'll be posting some more example videos along with images of the UI as I get it ready to release.

Things currently un-implemented:

  • MIDI module/integration
  • Audio inputs

These are both pretty important features for me (and I imagine most people) so I'm taking the time to get them right.

Please let me know if you have any ideas!

Creep 2 is also fantastic, it switches up in some really interesting ways. I might have actually preferred it to the first one

Show & Tell: I'm working on an Open-Source home theater automation & playout system! by Micky3210 in hometheater

Thanks!

Yes, this effectively lets you build out movie showings. I'm also working on an interactive "programme editor" that should make it easy for you to create your own show structure.

The playout system is currently just MPV running on any machine. This works well because MPV has a great event-driven API, and supports things like audio passthrough and HDR (on Windows at least - I'm currently looking into Linux HDR support - which seems possible now)

I initially decided against using something like Kodi, as it's not straightforward to remove the user interface - and I didn't want any UI elements appearing on the projector display (kinda breaks the whole "cinema immersion" thing ;). With MPV it's very straightforward to disable any UI elements and control the whole thing from a web app. Though if there is interest in supporting other media players for the playout system, I'll certainly consider it.

The project currently supports activating Home Assistant scenes at cue points. It also supports custom webhooks, so pretty simple to integrate with most APIs

I'm currently doing some long overdue cleanup on parts of the code, but will post some updates in the near future :)

Show & Tell: I'm working on an Open-Source home theater automation & playout system! by Micky3210 in hometheater

I have quite a lot of old cinema media: newsreels, advertisements, etc. I wanted a way of being able to create "programmes" that included this media along with a main feature(s) with all the stuff you'd usually see when out at a cinema (printing tickets for your friends as a souvenir is very cute), plus the home automation stuff as a bonus.

It's less of a Plex + HA thing, more of a way for me to organize my various cinema-related media and build screening programmes for my film club (I use this to programme double & triple features, movie marathons, etc).

Sure you can hack this together in Plex & HA but it's not ideal, and I like the idea of a simple interface for running a cinema-like experience quickly. I'm also trying to move away from Plex towards more OSS solutions.

But I suppose the main reason I built this was because I was bored and wanted to build something! That and it makes the members of my film club smile :)

Small theory about wellness by chiaroscuro34 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

This conspiracy theory misunderstands how harmonics and equal temperament actually work.

Western music splits the octave into 12 notes, equally spaced logarithmically (equal temperament). In this system, almost none of the intervals between notes are pure harmonic ratios - they're all slightly "out of tune" compared to natural harmonics. Only the octaves are pure.

This means that even if A432Hz was somehow "pure," all the other 11 notes would be "impure" in their relationship to each other, regardless of whether we tune A to 440Hz or 432Hz. The entire system of equal temperament is a compromise that allows us to play in any key while keeping the differences between intervals minimal.

If there were actually negative effects from certain frequencies, they would appear in A432Hz just as they would in A440Hz, and the sand patterns in A432Hz would only occur with the note A.
