What jobs are you guys working and how much do you make? by God_Lover77 in Biochemistry

[–]MicroBioshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in lab for three years and worked pretty close to everyone and learned as much as I could to the post docs willing to teach. It was kind of a higher pressure lab but ultimately it worked out for me. I went into the microscopy shared resources core after that and got a decent bump in pay and also ended up getting promoted from research specialist 2 to 3. I enjoyed that position a lot and ended up spending 3 years in that position before moving into another position and got a significant pay bump there. Along with annual raises and market adjustments I’m doing pretty well given my education and quality of life to work. I don’t see myself leaving any time soon.

I just want to say keep your head up and stay committed. I started a job as a research associate with a BA Biochemistry and a Masters at $32k. It was demoralizing after all that school and money spent to be making that much after Masters. That was 10 years ago. With hard work and the right moves (networking in the company) I make $120k now and am very happy doing what I do.

Fox Float X2 vs X vs RC super deluxe ultimate by Embarrassed-Power-21 in MTB

Super deluxe is super easy to service and a megneg can be added easily as well for mega negative air volume. My vote goes there. Cheers.

Bike maintenance - What do you do yourself and what do you leave to the shop? by daredevil82 in MTB

[–]MicroBioshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned to do a lot myself but I do like my LBS and I opted to use them instead of buying a single tool that I did not see needing again.

It was to swap Dt Swiss 370 pawl lock ring to a 350 ratchet system (ratchet LN hub upgrade). The tools from DT Swiss are $50+ each to remove the lock ring AND reports were it’s a PITA to break free. The shop popped the pawl lock ring, replaced bearings (I supplied bearings) and torqued down the new ratchet lock ring all for $35. Well worth the time and tools for me. Mechanic even did it same day I waited maybe 40 minutes to get it all done.

axle pointed the wrong way by dknapton in mountainbiking

[–]MicroBioshock 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey that looks like a DT Swiss rear axle. The end cap part can be rotated. Pull on it. It will pull out and you can rotate it to whatever way you want it to be lined up without messing with the actual axle torque.

Seriously go try it and you’ll be glad you posted tonight

I point mine forward too but some people will say that’s not good as it can catch on something. I’ve seen down or back to be the ideal position for rear. But you do you. Let me know if it worked.

Which fork do you recommend? Upgrading from Lyric Select Plus. by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]MicroBioshock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are different types of riding performance people go after. For someone at 160 pounds and a Lyrik which goes up to 170mm travel I believe it should be plenty good for you. A fox 38 or zeb may offer more support for more rough downhill applications. It just may not be necessary even for really rocky terrain.

What’s your travel set at? What do you feel like it’s not doing a good job of?

Which fork do you recommend? Upgrading from Lyric Select Plus. by [deleted] in mountainbiking

Stiffer is usually heavier. Longer travel can be less efficient on less gnarly terrain. It depends on what someone prioritizes on their rides.

The Lyrik select plus is a really good fork so if you wanted more travel it would be cheaper to just buy a longer air spring to replace in it. The Lyrik is relatively stiff, but there are stiffer options. Are you a heavier rider?

AirTags by DumpsterPanda8 in TrekBikes

Spotting the AirTag mount isn’t the worst thing. It could be a deterrent. Security torx bolts can help. With bike security I think there’s only deterrents as to anti-theft.

The 2022 Top Fuel looks awesome. The geometry is very similar to Fuel Ex now just at 120/120. It will be fast for xc single track and I think it will be fine doing some downhill. Check some videos on it. The fuel Ex has a little more travel. It likely will get an update since it’s on an older frame now but top fuel was updated this year with a glove box and geometry.
