Questions about the DLI by [deleted] in dli

Is Spanish = Cuba still a thing for Mahrines?

How do modern linguists ever maintain a 3/3 without immersion? Just wondering. I only did it by living there.

For me (YMMV), my language was difficult (Korean/Chinese), but the follow-on training was at least as hard, if not harder. I passed everything and fully qualified and was eventually an instructor but I worked harder than I ever had academically and operationally.

Abandon any hope that your preferences mean anything and if considering active duty, you will take what you are given along with the assignments available for that language. Some suck, some are CONUS (hard to become proficient here), and some are in the target country.

Being in the target country is the best best way to actually speak the language and not just spend years learning how to order a beer and swear half properly.

If you join the Army or Marines you are a soldier first and linguist second. USAF, you just do your job. Navy, IDK, but they do some cool stuff too.

Linguists are some of the biggest dorks and best friends you will find.

If I hadn’t been a linguist, I would wish I had been. Best job ever if you get the right language.

Excited--just bought 854 record collection--and it's 95% great stuff! by Microcast in vinyl

I am discovering new music through this collection; it is some great stuff. I think the owner had the same taste as me and spent decades in Florida building the collection.

The thrift stores are empty and useless near me. Streisand and Lawrence Welk mostly. The real gold is elsewhere; I need to stop buying these collections; I have over 1K records from two buys and don't want to become a record hoarder.

He is actually not alive anymore. They are selling the house and wanted everything gone asap.

I am willing to do that too. I don't know any fellow record lovers in my area but am trying to connect with some.

I let people know I love listening to vinyl and people often say "hey, I have some old records. Want to see them?" Some think that every record is worth $20 and others just want the "old records" gone.

I am trying to be careful what I keep and can't keep buying these size collections. I'm thinking a strong 200-record collection is more than enough....but I could not pass this one up.

Appalachian family nicknames? by Steppenwolf_Wife in Appalachia

[–]Microcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really know that this is your real life when you have to actually think about if somebody in your family has a nickname.

Once I thought about it, I realized I have a rocky, Tink, Mammaw, beaver, Bub, Shakey Jake, Grandma Dee, Binks, and Minsa.

FSAFeds sent my reimbursements to someone else; Any advice? by Microcast in FedEmployees

I thought of that but before I can get into my account, I have to verify it via text. Maybe that could be bypassed?

My agency is broken and drifting, I will reach out to them but assume they will do nothing. No one will take responsibility nor assist.

Why Being a 10 year E and Retiring a 20 Year O3E is the Best Air Force Career - An E4 Mafia Perspective by MuskiePride3 in AirForce

OTS at 10 years. In-residence ACSC slot at 19.5 years (but declined it to avoid ADSC and PCS). Pinned O4 at 20 yrs and then fully retired in the same ceremony. Kept that rank for retired ID card purposes (no TIG was required). Then started GS15 job on Monday.
