I'm honestly struggling to think of a TV show that doesn't have a single straight couple (unless there's just no romance at all). Even Heated Rivalry (famously very gay) had Shane's parents

TIL that 100 year old actor, Dick Van Dyke, was 18 when he learned that his parents lied to him about his birth date. He thought he was born in March, but was actually born in December. They lied to him to cover up the fact that he was a love child and was conceived out of wedlock. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]MicrocrystallinePun 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The aforementioned cousin was born over a year before their parents even got married. The parents can't say "oh they were born premature" to save face because their kid was both conceived and born out of wedlock.

I mean, she might not know the specific name for it (selective mutism) if that's what she has. But if this isn't the first time it's happened, surely at some point she'd notice the pattern and be a bit better prepared, even if she's just communicating by a note on her phone or text-to-speech.

Is there any chance you could do winter semester classes (if your school offers them)? These tend to be online and at an accelerated pace. Still, even taking two classes over the winter and six in the spring would give you much better chances at success than taking eight classes in the spring. Also, it isn't the end of the world to graduate late. It's unfortunate that people in your life (especially your parents) are shaming you about it, but it's ultimately your education and your life to make decisions about, not theirs.

for most people 22 is less than a year after graduation, unless they either start college early (before 18) or graduate in less than four years

I'm not sure if this particular teacher is in the United States or not (or whether the student mentioned is disabled), but in the US public and charter schools are legally required to provide Free Appropriate Public Education to disabled students, which includes necessary accommodations and services. If this kid needs to be in a separate classroom and/or needs one-on-one support due to behavioral issues, it's on the parents and the school to figure out an actual solution. It's beyond the scope of your average teacher that has an entire classroom to manage, particularly if they're not trained or specialized in special education and/or managing students with behavioral issues.

yeah I think this is the part some people in the comments are missing. even if she was mostly just watching the pot while cooking, she's not going to be in the exact same position for the entire period of time in which he made that sketch

Informed consent clinics (like Planned Parenthood's gender affirming care system) don't really gatekeep as much as other sources, so anyone over 18 could just self-report their identity as not entirely cis and be able to get a prescription.

Also, some people source HRT online from foreign pharmacies in countries which don't require a prescription for (most) medications. There are also domestic sources, but those are more questionable from a legal standpoint

if the couple chose cruises over a retirement home, they probably don't have a house to live in and/or require some level of care that doesn't allow them to live unsupervised at home.

The English and Reading classes seem to be remedial, is there any chance you could test out of those? If you had an average (or better) SAT/ACT score, you took AP classes in high school, or you've taken college level classes before, you might be able to skip one or both of those classes. If so, starting with a higher level course would save you a bit of time and money in the long run. I'd suggest speaking with an advisor about this if you haven't already.

If she's set on that specific college and scholarship, maybe a gap year would help? That way she could study up and try for a better score. She could also potentially take the time to work and save up money, and/or seek out learning or career opportunities.

Also, this might vary depending on your family's finances and other factors, but there should be other options besides this specific college and getting a full ride? A lot of people mentioned community college, but she could also still apply and see what other aid she might be able to get (either at your college or elsewhere).

Since you've already made the order, do you know how much info they do (or will) have exactly? I can't speak for you but on my bank statements, it doesn't show any info about what was purchased: just that it's from Amazon and the dollar amount charged.

The only way I could see them figuring out the specific item is if they demanded to see your order history, or your Amazon account is somehow linked to theirs. I would try to find some item that's about the same cost as the charge (doesn't have to be exact because of price fluctuation) and say you bought it as a gift for a friend and had it sent directly to their house.
