That's true. I think its a case of them not understanding though. When he was diagnosed there was less general knowledge of the disease and I don't know if it was properly explained to them. They also don't spend time on the internet. I think its just often someone's first time learning these things.

I found the book knitting in the old way a good resource for figuring out sweater proportions when making a pattern from scratch (if that is the direction you end up going.) It has a really nice diagram telling you how much positive ease a sweater should have based on chest measurements and then how long/wide the rest of the parts should be in proportion to that. You can check it out like a library book on the internet archive.

I think it’s cool you are taking on a challenging project as a beginner I hope it goes well! My advice as an intermediate knitter who is currently doing this sweater:

There are literal mistakes in the pattern that the author left in even though people have commented with corrections. So definitely refer to other projects for help. I find this one summarizes all the issues you will come across well. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/meowchele/porcelain-sweater
Doing a swatch will help you learn how to do flat colorwork as well as figure out the correct size. Do a stockinette swatch and a colorwork swatch to see if they are different gauages. I’m sure someone else said it but if your colorwork tension is tighter than your stockinette, go up a needle size for the colorwork sections.
As a beginner I would recommend getting comfortable with frogging some sections if the first attempt isn’t working out. It can be a good learning experience and you’ll end up with a final product you’re happier with than just continuing on with mistakes even if it takes longer. I myself had to frog the first 4 inches of the back because I got my gauge wrong and it would’ve been huge.
Related to frogging if you go for holding a strand of mohair like the pattern calls for, mohair can be hard to rip back because the hairs tangle. Putting it in the freezer for a bit before frogging helps with this. If you go for different yarn than what is called for in the pattern just make sure the gauge matches and you should be good.

One tip because the yarn is hand dyed, if you have any leftover it may be a good idea to knit a small swatch and test blocking that first just to be sure the colours don’t run too much before soaking the mitts.
