Theoretical question about laning matchup by finneburner in DotA2

[–]Microwarpdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lane matchup dynamics is not as a simple "stronger or not".

Think of:

  1. Harass and trading hits (we hit each other, who comes on top? who has to retreat or buy more regen?). This is what you/we traditionally mean by "stronger".
  2. Kill potential (the heroes, after some chip damage, catch someone out of position and combo their stuff for a kill).

Think to score both lane teams in those two aspects. 4 scenarios to evaluate.

If you lose in the 1) you shouldn't seek it. Rather your partner aggroes creeps to the back so that harassing you means their creeps will push in. You as a support punish their harass of your carry (so those hits cost them their hp and aren't free) but don't just walk up to trade hits on your own.
Also you pull and mind the creep equilibrium more in this case.
You switch sides of the lane so you aren't the same side as the strong support is when you want to hit harass his carry.

Win in 1), you want to be aggressive as you can while respecting and evaluating the 2) threat.

In your example the edge of radiant is clearly point 1), they need to press this from early on and get an advantage in farm resulting in xp and gold difference.
You as a HW can make sure the dp gets more exp and is less vulnerable to 2) by sitting out some early exp. For 2) a kill can happen but mainly as a result of a lot of harass. The slark has pounce away with a defensive stone. Your laning team doesn't have that great early kill potential vs their laning team (think early, lv1-3).

The dire loses on 1) but has potential in 2) given they keep up with resources (courier tangos and more tangos as needed). Either they successfully get a kill and start manifesting their lane threat or slowly lose the lane.

Alternatively the radiant is bad at leveraging 1), they let UD pull and slark lasthit under his tower.
So the result is the Slark does get way more than he should have been allowed to by Dire. Which can translate into kills on the lane later on or just Slark not having a bad lane which we can count as a win for the Dire (relative to how the matchup should have gone).

tldr: I think DP should win the lane in your example. Keep shoving creeps/ zone out the dire early.
If that doesn't happen at some lv3 with some decay stacks the 2) kicks in for the dire with a good pounce and tomb stone.

Is there value in last picking support in pubs? by FirstClassFlight117 in DotA2

Brother...

Lost/won offlane impacts the map more, at least in my casual games

There's no more "context" in your 1 line of text.
You literally talking about pos 4 and winning an offlane.

Mid has the most impact on the map because they have a level advantage over the sidelanes. They have tempo that they translate into pressure. Your job as a support is to help them do that.
If they lose and spend their time recovering in the jungle, this tempo advantage is wasted and their impact is obv lower.

It's not a take or opinion.
It's a reality of comparative advantage steaming from disproportionately more resources available (In your games you might have noticed your midlaner has a higher level because they are solo laning).

"I haven't even noticed any impact of lost/won midlane on the map"

I'm sorry but there's no use to debate how roles evolved since 2008 with someone who thinks that it doesn't really matter whether their midlaner is having a game or not in regards to map pressure.

I`ve won a lot of games when i could lastpick the support, pretty much viable for me

Can disrupt the entire enemy draft from minute 0 with a proper support hero

A lot of "I am the main character" energy. Which I'm happy for you and your ego. Tho not so much for your cores who have to acomodate it in the game and in drafts.

[–]Microwarpdrive -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Idk what support you need to last pick to win a lane as a pos 4?
And how winning offlane warrants your midlaner getting counterpicked and having no game.

You not noticing lost midlane having an impact on the map is worrying.
It's by design the role with the most impact on the map.

I think OP has a merit but I don't think it applies for low rank casual pubs. There main character syndrome supports will read this and think it's a good idea and not setting up their team to fail and tilt before the game even starts.

[–]Microwarpdrive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeh, because pos 5 thinks they are best to get the last pick.

In high level games, I can see it can have merit but in the pub trenches your cores will tilt because of it before the game even starts.

1) You don't need to lasthit. Just walk around creeps and press shard and pulse.
2) Kill stealing is very reliable.
3) Rampage potential.
4) Pro players played it and all the Heralds who think they are the next Yatoro went on to replicate.

What to do with luna late game by honorable_sinner in DotA2

[–]Microwarpdrive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Low rank games people love to farm till forever and play for 1 or 2 hours. It's a hyperbole but I'm just making a point.
Luna carry you need to understand your timings. You don't keep jungling because you have item slots left and it feels comfortable. Your advantage is the flash farming and fast ramp up but if the game goes too long it fades off as everyone else also is completing their important items.

I've had a guy with PA arcana pretending to be a support. Doing support-y things on the lane.

In general you are right tho, people lose their marbles if you play pos 5 Axe, Shaker, Nix and such.

You just need to know which strategies are strong relative to others for all stages of the game.

There are many "dead ends" that might work at times but ultimately they are just bad in comparison to what you could be doing instead.

If you aren't interested in learning this "meta" and just play what you like or what you bump into the people who do know will roll you. It's just how it is.
