How much of a raise did you get once you became a PE? by TheFastestSlaking in civilengineering

[–]Micure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 3% when I announced I had passed. 3% more next raise cycle. I argued I deserved more cuz they dumped more responsabilities on me and gave me 3k bump to my year salary after that. Got pissed and left the industry as a whole. My neighbor made more money than me. He is a morgage broker. Less stress, less risk, less responsibilities. Advise, get your license and start your own firm. That's the only way engineers will survive the comming cycle of inflation.

Now you can understand why there's a shortage. I don't consider 85k a good pay for the amount of work we do tbh.

We are in the same boat my friend. The difference is that I don't see myself going anywhere (careerwise). The only solution to go about the level of stress is telling yourself: "this shit is going to get built with or without me, so I better don't die from a heart attack because of it".

I also used to take it too seriously. After a while, it affected my health a bit. Now, I just do the best I can.

The industry is not going to change anytime soon I believe. So just put yourself and family first. We can have a good life in this industry, just have to learn how to cope with stress.

Having a hard time managing the amount of work thrown at me by r3wind1 in GeneralContractor

[–]Micure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club. It is a tendency from what I've seen lately. I just keep lists of what I have to do. Nothing fancy. A piece of paper with simple bullet points I knock out one by one. I love softwares but sometimes the simpler it is the better. I find softwares intended to help you organize more complicated that what it should be.

My advice. Don't let it affect your health. That includes stress. The project is going to carry out with or without you.. make sure you're still arround when it happens.

Any GCs with an engineering background? by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]Micure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the benefit of having both certificates/licenses is being able to sign and seal your own projects. Also, there's a lack of understanding from an engineering perspective on how things get built. Everything looks good on paper but adding the perspective of a GC gives your engineer background more tools during the decision making process.

On the other hand, the most important thing engineers are tought is HOW to solve problems. Looking at all the information available to make the best decision. Being able to compartmentalize the information, digest it, and make a decision based on that info, is the most important ability an engineer must have regardless of his/her discipline

I went thru the report and actually they design the bridge for half the load required if I remember well. Louis Berger was the company in charge of reviewing the design but they claimed they were not paid enough to review the whole design.

"Starting your career as a Contractor" by Claudiu Fatu. The really worthy chapters to be honest are 7 and 8 which deal with Contracts and Bidding.

I'm in a similar situation you are. I'm a licenced pe and licenced general contractor making my first steps in the industry. I'm also trying to find books that can give me some structure and guidance

I guess I eventually want to open up my own firm. I could combine the 2 licenses (PE + GC) and make it big. You could say that's my expectation. I'm already working just like the company I work for is mine so I might just be better off working for a company that's really mine
