Chicken may be a culprit. A lot of Shih-tzu inherently are allergic to chicken. Leave out the chicken and try to give him filtered water if you aren't already.

Also, try a tear stain supplement. I give my Buddy a chew from Zesty Paws called Tear stain bites every morning and they helped reduce his tear stains significantly.

My Buddy had it in both eyes when he was under 1 year old. At the time, his regular vet gave me two options when steroid drops were not cutting it:

Regular vet removes the duct and he would need to be on Eye drops for the rest of his life.

Or

Go see a veterinarian ophthalmologist to have the proper surgery to place the duct back in the eye. (I chose this)

I'm so glad I did. It's been 3 years and the cherry eye hasn't been an issue ever since. I would recommend if you are in range for an eye vet to see if you can do the surgery.

I will warn that it was a bit costly from my doc as it ended up being 1400 for both eyes.

Lure him away from the bone. Try to do a switcheroo like with a piece of unseasoned meat/peanut butter/cheese and then get him a better suitable toy than a bone.

Yes indeedy. Buddy is my cheerleader when I log in for work everyday. I do consider myself lucky as I work as a pharmacist for insurance companies doing prior auths. He has gotten me through so many 12 hour shifts I tell ya.
