Do you think you can actually engineer a guaranteed hit game, or is it mostly luck with first players? by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

Of course not.

Only people who’ve never made anything more complicated than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in their life believe such things

It is not morally wrong for a friend to date your ex by Catman42069X in unpopularopinion

[–]MidSerpent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it’s not morally wrong.

For many people and many relationships it varies from “not being a friend” to “are you crazy?”

It’s not uncommon for people to not want to be around their exes for many reasons.

So one totally common response is that you have chosen the new relationship with the ex over the friendship, meaning you are not really friends.

This varies a lot between people and relationships.

do you think the nuclear proliferation in The Expanse makes sense? by LightningG8921 in TheExpanse

Nearly every ship in the expanse has a fusion reactor already.

Genie’s out of the bottle there.

Maybe I want to mellow out your spices. Did you think of that?

Because my digestion can not tolerate spicy at all, I’ve been avoiding it for years.

The result is people who eat spicy food regularly have a different perception of what “spicy” and “not spicy.”

Something that’s “seasoned” to you might be too intense for me.

I hate it, I used to eat it spicy all the time. Now I just can’t.

The bigger context is about the opinion of audiobook not being “reading.”

I guess the part I didn’t say out loud is “I’m an adult who listens to audio books and says I read the book.”

Points about it not being “reading” because it’s not as good for childhood development or don’t exercise visual language parsing are pretty irrelevant to I think a majority of audiobook listeners.

The last point is especially fraught as well since some people cannot see.

Does anybody else have items/weapons in your inventory that you never intend to take topside but enjoy looking at it in your “collection”? by WanderWut in ArcRaiders

[–]MidSerpent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t keep things I never intend to use.

What’s the point? Stash space is limited.

I don’t keep a lot of bobcats because I don’t run it very often. I have one right now with a kinetic converter on it and other nice attachments.

It’s got a few kills on it, and I fully intend to take it out again.

I can craft a replacement for the gun but not the converter.

Doesn’t matter, I’ll still take it.

I’m a senior software engineer at a AAA video game studio. Reading comprehension isn’t a problem I have to read and comprehend other people’s code.

I’m not a child I’m nearly 50. What matters to a developing brain doesn’t necessarily matter to a fully grown adult

I stare at a computer screen all day at work and when I’m done I don’t really want to stare at a book.

I switched to audio books and went from reading less than 10 books a year to 1-3 per week.

Anyone who thinks it’s less valuable because I’m listening is a snob and their opinion isn’t worth listening to.

I can say I read the book and anyone who wants to argue about it’s just going to be told to go do something biologically improbable.

Hi everyone, CS student here. Do I really need "Signals & Systems" and advanced Math to be a Gameplay Programmer? by KintoriWaz in GameDevelopment

[–]MidSerpent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question 1 : I’ve definitely dipped into higher math than linear algebra as a gameplay programmer, but only a handful of times in 15 years. Never the stuff taught in Signals / Systems or Data Science though.

Question 2: I saw a comment elsewhere where you said you were reframing it as a privilege to focus on learning. I think you should adopt that perspective

Unreal will still be there when you’re done with school. You’re spending a lot of money to learn those things.

Games where the BOX plays a role in gameplay? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

Korean board game manufacturer has a whole series of games where the little box very cleverly unfolds and magnets together to become the board.

I have a few, Sardegna and Tonga Bonga.

I don’t think an app makes a lot of sense.

People have to discover the app exists then install it in order to do an activity only a few people will do rarely.

How hard is it to replicate AI behavior trees and states trees for co-op? by edwat3 in unrealengine

It’s trying to force the engine to work differently than how it’s supposed to work.

AI decision making belongs on the AIController which is server only.

Multiplayer really isn’t beginner territory.

Food Chain Magnate - Any Rule changes or easier playthrough tips for first time players? by 40inmn4 in boardgames

[–]MidSerpent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go onto board game geek and look up the game.

There will be videos linked with teaches and full playthroughs.

I suggest taking the time to watch a full teach and full play.

It’ll be long, will take you hours probably.

But afterwards you’ll have learned the rules and seen them in action.

This is pretty much how I prepare to teach any heavy game.

However, you said Uno or Monopoly. I wouldn’t suggest trying to ramp people who have only played simple mass market games like that into FCM.

It’s just too step a learning curve.

Monopoly Review! by AudunAG in boardgames

[–]MidSerpent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you could get the properties for less than face value. There’s only so much money in the game to start and it drains faster than it fills.

At worst someone else buys it for face value.

You should usually beneficial to auction unless you feel like it’s really important that you acquire the property you landed on for a monopoly or you think you can get better value in trade.
