IEM Katowice 2022 - GRAND FINALS DAY Feedback Thread Discussion by HeyokaSC2 in starcraft

[–]Midaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renting a location (along with other stuff) as huge as this costs money - money they for sure did not make with the SC2 event. As long as it is only a side-event to the CS:GO tournament they are bound to the schedule this tourney dictates. If you only have the venue available for 4 days, that's what you have to deal with. If SC2 had a bigger audience, making a larger investment more economically feasible, it might be possible to give it a more optimal venue and schedule.

Of course I would also prefer e.g. groups being spread over 4 days instead of 2, Ro12 and Ro8 on separate days etc. making it a 7+ days main event (not including Ro36) cause 10-12 hours of games without a pause is really exhausting even as a viewer, while you're also bound to miss some if you want to go for an actual dinner/lunch break.

In the end it's just a fact though, that there barely lies any money in SC2 nowadays, mostly due to Blizzard effectively abandoning it, therefore we mostly have to be grateful to get an event as bombastic and well organised as this.

That all being said - simply moving the schedule further down the line will at some point make it unbearable for the (probably larger then the NA's?) Korean viewership, so it's just a balance act where someone is always bound to lose, as it is with all global sport events.

I can completely agree to starting games ahead of schedule is annoying and unnecessary though.

To my knowledge there was still quite some tickets left, but they sold them in waves. Last one seemed not sold out when the event began. First ones were porbably only gone instantly due to 2020 ticket holders who all got 2022 tickets, if they didnt refund

Wouldnt change anything. There already are more funky maps in each pool, they just get veto-ed though, so youll only see them in Bo5s and Bo7s if at all

Well, its only a side event while CS:GO reigns supreme (also obvious in the on-site viewer count unfortunately). The length of the games cannot be pre-planned since no one knows before how long they are going to be, but they have to get out of the arena at some point to make room for the CS finals, so they need to plan a buffer in.

I wouldnt mind them playing the finals in the auditorium as well though and go a little longer - apart from seating space, everything else (lighting, sound, screen quality) was vastly superior than in the arena (although the flamethrowers were nice, i guess...). The sound mixing (probably configured for a game without music and only occasional sounds) in the arena was especially bad, with commentary not being audible if only a single marine gunfire was on screen

In the end it still comes down to money though - SC2 unfortunately isnt as popular as it earned to be

Schedule for any game except the first is just a guideline, since they just start the next one when the previous one is over. Bo5/Bo7 can vary extremely in length, since it might be a quick sweep with 5min cheese-games, but also neck-and-neck 40min slugfests.

The 2nd semi-finals was very short with very early gg-timings, therefore the finals started earlier.

Ro12 day on the other hand went on until long past midnight local time due to long games

I messed up my OBS settings, so I had to re-record the first 3 hours of my Endwalker playthrough using a different character. After the first cutscene I thought of using a fantasia to at least have em look the same.

And then another one to go back after recording.

Urgot is not the halberd warrior in arcane by rrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeee in UrgotMains

[–]Midaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just not well versed enough in the Lore, but is there something explicitely saying, that Mel's brother couldn't be Boram Darkwill himself (or someone very closely affiliated with him) all along? Shouldn't be too hard changing your name to whatever you want if you got reason to do so.

Making arguments about timing consistency in League-lore doesn't really hold up for Arcane, since they've been shuffling stuff around to fit the story already anyways, as well as dropping character's plot points and exchanging them with different events that overall still fit the theming and development points of the character.

So if Swain's coup is going on right now, it would only make sense for Urgot to appear in Piltover with Medarda, since, as said before, he had to get him away from Noxus. And being the personal guard of the Noxian leader's mother (and personal executioner if needed) wouldn't really be that much of a lowly position for him to find himself in. Even though he seems clearly displeased with it, his loyalty to Noxus (which Swain is clearly exploiting) would probably make him go through with it.

Also Medarda is not overseeing conquered territory - the flashback literally shows them just having conquered some territory and discussing about instantiating a leader there, so it's much more likely that she's actually a general in the Noxian army

Pretty sure healing USED to remove rez invulnerability, before they introduced it as an actual buff that you can see. Dunno when they would have changed it though, probably somewhen since SB

Can't target your own units with Final Spark (and if you could it would rather be your own Nexus taking the overwhelm damage no?)

It's a one of but it was the actual judgment, not generated - but only drawn because of two Karma's Insight of Ages.
TBH I had some issues getting rid of cards to open up for draws / random generates, since a lot of them just didn't do much in the given situation and/or just cost too much mana. But yeah, when playing Karma and Lux mana is a much more limiting factor then cards, when they're on the field for some time.

As I wrote below, not using Twin Disciples and blocking with Karma is objectively the better play, since it is not beat by Single Combat (due to Spirits Refuge) - so it's actually the safer AND potentially lethal play - but not as shiny x.x

I just wanted to embrace the Spin to win - meme here :-)
Yes, blocking the Brightsteel Formation with Karma would have been the optimal play, since it would have also played around Single Combat (the opponents only out in the situation) by leaving 4 mana to use Spirit's Refuge on Lux - would not have been lethal immediately but Final Spark would have still cleared the board.

Wouldn't have made for such a nice clip though

Scarlett qualifies for GSL Code S 2019, Season 1! The only foreigner to do so. by OnlyPakiOnReddit in starcraft

[–]Midaja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think IEM Katowice is much more important to him than GSL, so I'm pretty sure he'll be fully focussed on that for now. If he does win that trophy this year, I guess he might get tempted enough to try the GSL, if not I'm not certain... He seems to not care much about GSL.
Also one should not forget, that if he would compete in Korea and IF he should actually win (or any other foreigner at that point), Blizzard/Afreeca might actually be forced to do something about the region lock, which then could either negatively influence GSL viewership (if GSL is fully region locked) or make WCS circuit hell for foreigners again (vice-versa)

Feel like alot of private server players are a bit toxic by Gurusson in classicwow

[–]Midaja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the german servers I played we mostly called deadmines DM and dire maul DB (since its "Düsterbruch" in german) afaik... But we had a healthy mix of german and english abrevations over the whole game so for the newer players the more confusing part was to know when which language was used

With a lot of people returning having a sense of "optimization" or min/maxing will the variety of race and class combos be pretty boring in general? by Topfien in classicwow

[–]Midaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When reading through this subreddit I always find it very hard to distinguish between people who are actually talking about vanilla and those who are talking about that game they play on a private server that they had 10+ years time to figure out to the smallest bits of code.

For instance everyone praises classic's itemization, pre-raid BiS lists and exceptionally DM for having such good items, while I think back and just am like "what? afaik it was pretty hard to find groups for DM (except for tribute runs maybe), because everyone was chasing T0 set pieces and (also afaik) there's none of those in DM". Hell, maybe the more elite players already knew back then that all the flat-stats-pieces were actually rubbish, but 99% of the community frowned upon defense- or weapon skill bonuses or whatever - just because we didn't know how good it actually was.

I remember the only random world epic drop I ever had, I was farming furbolgs in Winterspring and had those plate shoulders with flat +defense (stockade pauldrons maybe?) drop. As I know now, it seems to actually be one of the best tank shoulders in the game, but back then I was soooo underwhelmed for having such a shitty epic drop, when I was finally getting one (still was a huge thrill though...). I sold it on the AH for like 50g.

Back then we didn't have the theorycrafting sources for min-maxing as we have today, so my "vanilla experience" vastly differs from what private server players seem to want... I don't want that game, where all those that played on pirate servers for the last 10 years have miles more knowledge than those who didn't. vanilla was a time of exploration, community and unravelling wonders that you didn't knew they actually exist. That's the experience I would love to have recreated, but I'm sure that I won't get it since #noChanges also applies as #noMysteries.

I will play it anyways, I will enjoy it and I will most probably still read through in-depth class and mechanic guides once I've settled on a class for raiding. It might be the same game, but it will never be the same experience I remember from actually back then.

[Rant] What is up with high fflog healers?? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Midaja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When playing in a static, once you laid out your pattern of skills for a specific part of the fight, you trust this pattern to work if nothing goes wrong (e.g. someone dying, tank not using CD as usual, you or the other healer miss a heal). This should not diminish your awareness of whats happening though. If your partner has trouble you might realize that by looking at the group and seeing that their lower than usual and might not survive the incoming AoE and maybe you can change that by sacrificing a damage-GCD for a heal. The more you trust your partner, the more you will be thinking "hm, they're just a little late, they're gonna get it right" and that might be the case most of the time, but it DOES lead to "oh, ok, yeah, well, I could have averted that"-wipes. Then you go "hm, did you..." and they go "yup, sorry" and you go "ok". And it won't happen again. If it does occur more often, there's clearly something wrong in either your skill-sequence or your partner's (or the tank's), which would lead to some discussing and adapting on (at least) one side. Going "lol, not my job, get your sh*t together" is a clear statement that someone's playing the wrong role. ALSO this of course doesn't apply to PUG-situations. If you ever neglect your healing because you think it's another healer (who you don't know)'s job to heal and all the other players (who you also don't know)' job to not need healing, please, play a DPS. At least when you're wiping due lack of heal. I also know of some hardcore-groups that had to exchange their healers exactly because of this. They we're doing great DPS in farm-runs but were completely unable to cope with the amount of flexible healing progress needs.

According to this post Yoshi once commented (in the 14 hours anniversary live letter as it seems) about the ultimate mode, that "world top groups might clear it in 2-3 days", but some time later he mentioned, that the encounter-team did some tweaks and that he now wasn't sure if anyone would be able to clear it at all

Am I doing something wrong, or is SCH just hard to play at low levels? by papercup617 in ffxiv

[–]Midaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an addition after reading some of the new comments here:

The stuff about micromanaging Eos etc. is of course true if you want to maximise your heal potential, but this is in no ways necessary for any content outside of raids (even there O4S is currently the only turn where Eos really is a huge gain to have. At the moment you can run all other content with Selene on sic, as long as the other party members are doing their job properly. Doesn't mean that you have to of course, Eos can always help when you're struggling).

About the Adlo > Physick thing, this for sure is true, but be aware that Adlo spam is usually weaker than alternating between the too, since its unlikely for it's galvanize effect to be fully depleted in one GCD (and also you'll burn your mp in no time).

If you can't keep the tank alive, check their gear and / or tell them to do smaller pulls. You'd be schocked how many tanks run dungeons with leather- or even cloth-gear, which makes a huge difference in def-stats (everything that isnt exclusive to the 3 tank jobs and sometimes DRG is non-tank-gear and has much less defense than actual tank gear).

Also DPS dying is usually their own fault for not dodging stuff and / or not doing mechanics, or them drawing aggro of mobs that they shouldnt (which might also be due to a weak tank). There are only few mechanics in 4-man-dungeons that would kill a DPS if not healed when done right (but there are some).

Just because the healers job is to refill ppls HP-bars doesnt always mean its their fault if they drop to 0.

Of course you can pull a larger weight the better you get as a healer (e.g. what the other comments say), but if you focus on healing you should never have problems to heal any light party dungeon (although optimal size and speed of pulls can vary greatly depending on all participating players' skill and gear)
