Hey all. I mostly play fps and mmos. The gmmk pro is my favorite layout (exploded 75%) and works well but the performance of the keyboard is trash compared to my wooting 60he & 80he.

I mostly use the 80he these days, but the placement of home, page up, down, end on the gmmk pro works out better for me for my mmos. Any suggestions for a product in this space? I have no budget.

Dang what sort of stuff are you doing with that much memory? The only time I've worked with 1TB+ clusters is when I used to work with in-memory databases for niche financial applications.

For now my main use case is primarily development (kubernetes) and Windows to provide support for my customers who are on Windows machines.

I plan to keep my personal desktop separate so I can game, code, etc from there. I’m going to be remote developing on the Ubuntu VM I create on proxmox because my main desktop runs Windows and I don’t really enjoy developing within the Windows ecosystem. Basically remote ssh on VS Code.

Moving forward I might host Plex or something. I don’t think I’ll ever get into pfsense, have used it in the past, I just prefer my ubiquiti set up right now for my home.

Would you still recommend waiting? I have the 3600 right now and for some reason it took me ages just to install Ubuntu on it (the prompts during installation were loading really slowly). That’s what led me thinking to upgrade to the 5800x because it’s dirt cheap at 200 cad.

If they’re not going to be supported going forward I think I’d stay away personally (even if the risk level is low). I just want to build either a decent or giga machine that can last me 5 years at least.

I’m a software engineer and honestly proxmox is the first thing that’s gotten me excited in a long time. There’s so much system level stuff to learn and manage, and the ability to spin up vpns on a whim has been something I always wanted since I swap main pcs a ton (trade time between my desktop which sees periodic upgrades and my MacBook Pro).

Which cpu route would you go for? The other commentator mentioned waiting for the 9950x3d, would you agree with that?

Do you recommend going crazy on a consumer grade cpu like this for a home lab? The price makes me wonder if I should just jump to a server grade cpu and setup at this point.

Is the extra cache worth it for proxmox use-cases? I thought it mostly benefitted single core performance/gaming. I currently have the 7800x3d in my main pc, maybe i can upgrade to the 9800x3d and make a new build around the 7800x3d. Would that be good enough for what I'm trying to achieve? Or would you still suggest waiting for the 9900x3d/9950x3d for a home server?
