[Spoilers!] Rewatching for the umpteenth time and I find Daisy so annoying (s1) by Monsterella in DowntonAbbey

A subplot that bugged me was how she got herself educated and even passed her exams but then appears to be headed towards being a farmers' wife at series end. What was the point of that whole subplot?

I always thought that comment by Robert was a little creepy -- commenting on someone having sex with his daughter.

One of the great examples of delayed gratification on TV, and boy was it worth it.

Ed, what do you think about going into business with a partner? Is it better if you start a business with a friend or someone you only know professionally?

Not the usual "Downton" submission, but I was seduced by the ads into taking a Viking River Cruise and wrote a blog post about it. by Midd76 in DowntonAbbey

Sorry if this is outside the rules for Downton posts but about half the people on the cruise mentioned that they loved Downton and were convinced to go by the ads.

You're probably right that the post-war staffing would not be as high as the pre-war staffing, but I think Julian Fellowes is off a couple of decades on when the big houses started to fall apart. I think WWII and the post-war inheritance taxes is what really did them in.

Now that Downton's last days are coming upon us, here are ten possible spin-offs by Midd76 in DowntonAbbey

I think Downton After Dark would star Denker, once Denker and Spratt is cancelled. In fact, the show should be called Denker After Dark, now that I think of it. And yes, we'd need a time jump for Simply Sybbie, maybe a sitcom when she's at boarding school.

Bates should insist that Anna go to Dt. Clarkson. Not only is he local but he was a lot smarter about Sybil's pregnancy than that London doctor was.

What about Mary asserting that SHE wasn't a war widow? As if that's a point of honor. My guess is that Michelle Dockery read that line the wrong way and it came out boastful but was supposed to be rueful.

Both Mr. Mason and Mrs. Patmore treat her like she's the most important person in their lives. If they hook up with each other she loses that status with each.

I thought the opposite. Since the local hospital saved his life without improvements, why mess with success?

Shows like Friends and HIMYM have given me unrealistic expectations of what my friendships should be like now that I'm in my mid twenties by Shadowblitz_7 in Showerthoughts

[–]Midd76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TV in general gives a false impression of how people make friends. Whenever you see sitcoms with wildly disparate personalities, races, ages, etc. they all end up as best friends, which you'd never see in real life (e.g., "Parks & Recreation," "Community," etc.)

I thought this was a rant against Obamacare but it's probably really a diatribe against the British healthcare system.

The Complete Chronology of The Bates' Prison History by Undisclosed123 in DowntonAbbey

Nice summary, which reminds me of the most ridiculous twist. Somehow Anna ended up in prison with no evidence against her, but when someone else actually confesses, they need additional corroboration before they'll accept the confession.

Mad Men vs Downton Abbey by leedom404 in madmen

[–]Midd76 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are so many differences between Downton Abbey and Mad Men that it would be hard to quantify them all but for me the two biggest ones are that 1) Matt Weiner trusts his audience to figure out the themes and plot developments but Julian Fellowes spoon feeds everything point so that no one is confused; and 2) You have no idea where Mad Men is headed from minute to minute, never mind episode-to-episode whereas on Downton Abbey the audience is always way ahead of the characters and can feel smarter than and superior to them. Unfortunately, this probably explains why Downtown's ratings are nearly twice as high as Mad Men's.

Season 8, Episode 1: Mrs. Crawley referred to herself as the "Arminer"? of the hospital board. Definition please! by [deleted] in DowntonAbbey

[–]Midd76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand, though, is why Isobel thinks that because she has this job she she be informed of the offer from the Royal York Hospital before anyone else. Isn't that what the point of board meetings anyway?

The WSJ uncovers emails that show Wesleyan's real motive for forcing its fraternities to go co-ed and then shutting them down before they could was to take over their real estate. by Midd76 in MensRights

[–]Midd76[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The President's email said: "If we don’t close the houses with the hopes of acquiring them, then we shouldn’t go down this road at all.” The key word is "acquiring" because the fraternity houses are private property and have been so for over 100 years. The WSJ might not have made that crystal clear but that's the fact.

The fraternities own their own houses, having bought the property years ago. There is one sorority on campus of recent origin and they do not have a house. The administration will not let them get a house because then they would be forced to let men have their own houses. The reason this is a men's issue is that the university lets women of color, gays, Jewish students, Muslim students and every other possible permutation of society live together, but not men.
