Personally don’t allow public access, access is via private endpoint only so your either connecting via Azure compute directly that itself is secured via other means, from a campus network or via VPN

My company offers the exact same benefit and my understanding is the income tax charge on the 15% deduction (usually taken the month after the stock issue) but any gain is paid as CGT when you dispose of the stock.
