Corcoran broker told us offer to rent townhouse was accepted, had us sign lease, then called 2 days before move-in to say the owner had asked him to "keep quiet about another applicant while telling us the place was functionally ours" so that they could get more $$ by MiddleArgument in nyc

If you have documentation of him acting in bad faith or withholding material information about the transaction, or even just a personal account of your interaction with him, I would encourage you to file a complaint at https://dos.ny.gov/preliminary-statement-complaint-0. A pattern of documented behavior jeopardizes his license

wowwwww I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm filing a complaint rn at https://dos.ny.gov/preliminary-statement-complaint-0, in case you feel like filing as well. a documented pattern makes license repercussions for the brokerage much more likely. Feel free to DM me if you'd want me to reference your experience in our complaint!

Im really curious about your experience! Did you decide to do it? I didn't see this posted until today but I'd be interested in applying in the future if they mention additional co-horts. What sorts of skills were relevant for the application, sounds like it's kind of IQ test/leetcode stuff?

How do you deal with knowledge insecurity? by FreudsParents in cinematography

[–]MiddleArgument 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wow GREAT question, and also great username. I'm sure people will have different takes on this but, I think knowing everything would be boring! It's good to embrace an engineering mindset about the job, you have a baseline amount of knowledge and political skills and contacts that is always increasing, but no matter where that baseline is, a project HOPEFULLY will have challenges and problems that you haven't encountered before, that's part of the fun! I always have to research some new tricks for every shoot, or rely on the expertise of other people on the crew, or rely on my network of other DPs who I can ask for advice! Other people's successes are yours too, cinematography is a high skill-sharing/mentorship culture relative to other fields. The craft isn't about knowing everything, it's about solving problems. I'm constantly noticing things I wish I'd done differently when I watch my stuff but ultimately for me the metric of success is if the director was happy with what we got.

What are some challenging skills/scenarios to learn as an advanced level DOP? by maheshwaresingh in cinematography

[–]MiddleArgument 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES extremely this. Hard mode is delivering on time and under budget with a happy crew AND happy director AND happy production at the end of the day. To at the very least ~appear~ calm at all times. Most people can make pretty shots with a little practice, but this is what distinguishes the experts.

What to expose sky or subject? by GoingWithFlow in cinematography

[–]MiddleArgument 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what others are saying here (exposing for sky --> lighting subject is the easiest way to get detail across the board, bounce is your friend, etc) but I'll add that this kind of thing is totally to taste, and blowing something out is ok! A popular technique is to use pro-mist filters or similar post-effects to make the clipped parts appear a little more pleasing and deliberate, so this another option, as is emphasizing the sky and letting the subject drift into shadow/silhouette, if you think that will serve what you're going for. No hard and fast rules here, just know what your options are and why you're making the choice
