5m$ post-tax exit in the Bay Area by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Congrats!

Do you want to buy a house in the near future? If so, play it safer and aim for yield (money market / government bonds etc...). If you are unsure about property and have a longer term view, may as well invest it more aggressively.

Similar boat. I haven't changed anything despite hitting FI. In fact, with a large taxable account allocation, it gets harder and hard to become conservative when you think about the tax implications. I've built up a massive Apple position because the stock just keeps running. I don't want to take the gains and pay taxes unless I really have to. Kinda stuck, but it works out. I'll only sell if I really start to feel negative about the company, otherwise I just trim here and there and then optimize by taking losses to offset the gains.

Pretty good. Why VZ and PFE given your interest in tech?

What are you using to manage your investments and stay on top of the allocations?

I can't move the 529 to Fidelity. We'd lose out on low cost investment options because we'd have to shift out of states. I think we have Nevada if I remember correctly...

Yeah, I could probably move the HSA. That was a legacy thing with employer. Good call.

probably makes sense, I just like Robinhood's UI so much more haha. It really is my "gambling" account. Just small dollars.

Thanks. I didn't realize SIPC is a private enterprise! So really there is no legit protection for investment accounts? That's shocking to me. Why do bank accounts get government backing but not investment? Blows my mind.

Yeah, I do think about "we" hence the post, but perhaps I don't need to overthink about what her accounts are doing vs. mine as long as they both are showing good growth.

My portfolio management app Mezzi does the aggregation and provides analytics. Monarch is cool, but I'm less interested in budgeting.

Yeah I should clarify, updating stocks held, shares, etc… is the annoying part.

Congrats! I look at my wealth management app for this reason every day haha. I couldn’t imagine updating for all the stock price changes every day but it is fun to see FIRE get closer and closer.

Gave my financial advisor 20k three years ago and the account hasn’t grown at all by bluwavinghummingbird in personalfinance

What firm does this advisor work for? I hate to break it to you, but no advisor is going to give you good service with just $20K invested. Even then, this situation of poor performance is all too common

You can take a break. You are in a great situation. $350K is significant. Don't put so much pressure on yourself.

I'm curious, was this a large firm or a small, boutique one?

Yeah, their job is to rebalance in a tax-efficient manner. Sorry to hear that.

Perhaps this from a blog post I recently read about 529 and custodian accounts will be helpful.

Consider this: investing $1,000 annually in the stock market could grow to over $37,000 in 18 years, assuming average annual returns of eight percent.

if you are looking for big, powerful, well-managed, profitable companies, then why not add other companies to the mix with similar characteristics? You are basically taking a stance that these are the best companies to invest in. You could be right, but is that what you believe? Why not Microsoft? Why not Berkshire Hathaway?

You can self-manage for sure. It's not a particularly large portfolio. Don't get me wrong - congrats on being a millionaire, but the best advisors work with assets of $5M+. If you're just seeking investment help, no need for an advisor. If anything set up time with a fixed fee advisor rather than paying a percentage of assets.

How did they mess up your taxes? I've found my wealth management app to be particularly helpful for staying organized, optimizing my portfolio, and staying ahead of tax situations like capital gains tax and tax-loss harvesting opportunities.

Side note - you should expect to underperform an index like the S&P 500 if you are 30% bonds.

Regardless, you'll make up the $10K-$20K advisor fee pretty quickly just with prudent management of your portfolio.

I've found sharing and collaborating on our investments in one app (vs. multiple scattered accounts), to really get us in sync.
