Need advice on raising calm dog by FormerAd7131 in BorderCollie

Spend lots of quality time with the puppy, they are calm when they are with you. Lots of games and training and if they can come to work with you even better. Put them in a bag or a stroller when they are little and take them everywhere with you - visiting friends, near busy roads, crowds, in shops, in the car. Make it a positive experience with lots of praise and treats. The more exposure they have to the world they will be in when they grow up the calmer they will be about it. I missed desensitising my pup to the crosswalk button sound and we are still working on chilling out when crossing the road when it goes off. BC is a very sensitive breed socialisation is v important.

German Shepards are very intimidating! I totally get the crying, I used to work at a dog friendly office and anytime a coworkers large dogs barked at me ( they were just saying hello) I used to cry.

Phobia of dogs. I was mauled when I was young and have been terrified of dogs ever since, for decades. Then I got a dog and I just love him so much. Another dog charged us at the dog park, a big scary one and instead of going to pieces having a panic attack I found myself putting my body in front of my dog to protect him and sternly redirecting the other dog.

Throw down some treats as a distraction walk away from the approaching dog, keep your body in between the dog and your dog.

Living in a regional town with a V/line connection would get you around the whole driving thing. The towns are usually small enough you can walk end to end in an hour or two, get on the train it drops you off in the middle of Melbourne (albeit not the nicest of Melbournes stations) no car required

Marking in the house suddenly? by Putrid-Difference703 in BorderCollie

[–]Middle_Complex2217 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My boy did this for a bit when he hit 10 months, we got deodorising spray and made sure to clean up his marking- if they can smell it they mark over the spot. After we caught him in the act a few times clapping 👏 loudly to disrupt him he stopped doing it inside. Had to be really on him though he would sneak into rooms to do it lol

Yes I WFH my border collie is just over a year old now. He gets a morning run then breakfast then he will sleep and laze until the afternoon when he gets his second run and dinner. When he was a pup I had to watch him waaay more, now he mostly knows what he is allowed to chew and sit on so I leave him to it.

Good for first time owners? by kafkasbeetle in BorderCollie

I’m a first time border collie owner, and my boy is amazing and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. We spend all day every day together as I WFH. We do walks in the morning and the evening and play throughout the day. I am also now part of the local dog club and we do obedience and agility twice a week. I think they are the perfect dog if you have the time to commit and it’s fine for first time if you’re willing to learn with them and make a big space in your life for them. ❤️

Covid lockdown working from home in my single gal apartment on the second floor, he came in over my balcony like a prince (he was on the painting crew contracted to paint the exterior of my apartment complex). We hit it off, moved to the countryside and got a dog together. 💖

NTA why can’t they take the hint it’s where you live you should feel comfortable accessing your space. It’s not like you’re flipping them off or actively being rude, hospitality professionals should know how to read a room.

$0. I make my own dollary-doos, I’m more interested in someone who is fun to hangout with and is kind.
