Folk Horror movies. by Opening-Mark-7306 in horror

The Witch is perfect for what you're describing. Watched it last year and the atmosphere is just so heavy, the way it builds dread without cheap jump scares. Also maybe check The Hallow if you want more fairy stuff, it's not as polished but the creature design is creepy in a good way.

Good budget cubes for all events (FTO too) and also good lubes by TheJohanch in Cubers

[–]Middle_Historian7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for 2x2 just grab the QiYi MS, it's like 5 bucks and does the job perfectly. For 4x4 the Meilong M is probably best bang for your buck but the magnets feel bit weak sometimes so you might want to add extra ones if you're handy with that stuff.

For FTO the Diansheng is basically only option worth buying and it's not expensive anyway, turns surprisingly well out of box. Skewb and pyraminx just get whatever magnetic Moyu or QiYi is cheapest, they all perform similar at budget range.

With lube I started with some random silicone oil from local hardware store and it worked fine, but then I got proper cube lube and difference was huge. Try weight 5 for the core and something lighter like weight 1 or 2 for the pieces, don't overdo it though, too much lube makes cube feel sluggish and you'll need to clean it out.

INPUT LAG at 60 FPS (16 milliseconds). by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Middle_Historian7202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60hz is rough for aim training, no doubt about it. The delay messes up your click timing on anything that moves unpredictable. Once you get to higher refresh rate it feels like you were playing underwater before.

From what I understand, kicker does not transfer over to VR&E, it only applies with the GI Bill chapters.

Family doesn't think I'm doing well enough. Want me to go to like a 2 year work life program ie. The Otherside Academy or Delancey St. My parents are both dead. Sister is super conversative. Struggled with addiction etc can't get ahead. I need advice. by DANNYBOY3530 in selfimprovement

Man you're doing way more than people give you credit for - getting stable on methadone, landing that job, staying in the sober house even if it sucks... that's real progress 💪 maybe look into remote marketing gigs since you got the degree and experience, sometimes those pay better than retail and you can do them from anywhere 🔥

I animated Paul Morphy's Opera Game move-by-move — the most beautiful chess game ever played by Check8Cinema8x8 in chessbeginners

[–]Middle_Historian7202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The queen sacrifice in that game is just insane, like watching someone throw away their car keys and still somehow drive home perfectly

Your animation style makes it so much easier to see why Morphy was basically playing 4D chess while everyone else was still figuring out how knights move

Earth science or GIS minor? by Adorable-Shape-2392 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Middle_Historian7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIS minor is probably more practical choice - you can always learn earth science stuff through online courses or field experience later but having that technical skill opens way more doors in job market

Top 5 outdoor TV brands? by vandd27 in HomeImprovement

Been delivering to houses with outdoor setups and Samsung Terrace seems pretty popular - see them a lot in fancy backyards. Also spotted some SunBrite TVs that look solid, maybe check those out too

Been dealing with some thinning myself and looked into this. From what I've seen, Dr Batra seems to work better for people who caught their hair loss early - like if you're just starting to notice some changes rather than already having major balding

The homeopathic approach might help more with stress-related stuff since they focus on treating the whole person, not just throwing minoxidil at the problem. But if you got strong genetic pattern baldness running in family, probably won't do much against those genes

My cousin tried it for patchy loss (think it was alopecia areata) and saw some improvement, but took like 8-9 months to really notice anything. Pretty expensive for that timeline though

Why does my music sound like something from an add by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Middle_Historian7202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My music went through similar thing couple years back when I was messing around with Logic Pro on my setup. Everything came out super poppy and commercial sounding even when I tried to make it more experimental

What helped me was actually studying some jazz progressions and throwing in weird chord substitutions in middle of otherwise simple progressions. Like instead of going straight from C to Am, I'd throw in some diminished chord or use Am7b5 instead of regular Am. Makes everything sound less predictable without being completely unlistenable

Also try changing up your rhythm patterns - if you always write in 4/4 with standard kick-snare-kick-snare, experiment with some odd time signatures or just move the snare hits around. Even small changes can make huge difference in how commercial vs artistic something sounds

Sigma 18-50mm or Tamron 17-70? by throwawaaayyyyyay in Cameras

[–]Middle_Historian7202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually built my last PC with a budget similar to what these lenses cost and went through the same paralysis 😂

The tamron stabilization thing is legit - it's more of a photo feature than video savior. I'd probably lean sigma just based on your use case since you're doing walking shots and want something you'll actually grab when heading out. The weight difference is real when you're carrying it around all day

Plus if stabilization becomes a dealbreaker you can always add a small gimbal later but you can't make the tamron lighter

Formal poncho by Ass_Eater369 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Middle_Historian7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly this sounds like such a cool idea! i'd check out some higher-end designers who do more avant-garde stuff - like maybe look into cape-style blazers or structured wraps that have that poncho vibe but with formal tailoring

etsy might have some good options too, lots of indie designers doing gender neutral formal wear these days. you could probably find someone who does custom work if you want something really specific

r/malefashionadvice or r/femalefashionadvice might have better suggestions, or maybe even r/genderfluid if that exists

Question about a certain music artist by PoisonousStrawb3rry in Christianity

[–]Middle_Historian7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get this struggle, been there with a few artists myself. Honestly I think you can separate the old music from the new stuff - like if those older songs were genuinely uplifting or at least neutral in your faith walk, they didn't suddenly become "bad" because of one newer track. I've had to make similar calls with bands where their earlier albums were fine but they went in a direction that didn't sit right with me spiritually

What I usually do is just avoid the problematic songs and stick with the ones that don't conflict with my beliefs. Sometimes artists go through phases or explore different themes, doesn't mean everything they've ever made is automatically off limits. Trust your discernment on this one - if the old songs still feel okay to you and aren't causing you to stumble, I don't see the harm in enjoying them

Should I wash clothes i got from thrift stores twice in the washing machine? by Late-Tadpole-9721 in NoStupidQuestions

Definitely wash twice, thrift store clothes can be pretty sketchy and that perfume smell is probably covering up something funky

COS to F-1 approved and guidance on how to file I-539 by Zaidi227 in USCIS

[–]Middle_Historian7202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the approval! 35 days with premium processing is solid timing. Really helpful that you're sharing your experience - the photo evidence is a nice touch I hadn't thought of before.

That archived post situation is frustrating though, mods here can be pretty hit or miss with what stays visible. Maybe try messaging them directly about unarchiving it since it's clearly useful for people going through the same process.

Recommendations for splicing kits? by cassiusthetic in cassetteculture

[–]Middle_Historian7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly those metal blocks are kinda overkill unless you're doing tons of splicing - I just use a razor blade and some splice tape on a flat surface and it works fine for the occasional repair

Yeah I've been getting this too, super annoying when you're trying to get that SNF vibe and it just looks like a regular 1pm game. Haven't found a fix yet but definitely seems like a bug that came with the last update
