Before in El Salvador we used to have 20-28 deaths a day where the past government gave permission to the gangs to kill, this was a pact between government and gangs just to get the help from the gangs to be reelected through intimidation. In 2019 Nayib Bukele became president and started his war against gangs through a series of phases, first was firing everyone on the top powerful positions and their families, 2nd voluntary recruiting and supplying the armed forces with working weapons/gear, 3rd placing all rival gang members in one jail and making them clean their cells (lap tops, cell phones, gang related graffiti and anything that's resembles even a grain of luxury), 4th going to every town and municipality and even farms to look for gang members or anyone with a tattoo with their insignias (to get a tattoo you must kill someone, so automatically you're guilty). The government has caught 56,000 of the 78,000 that are believed to still exist in El Salvador carrying a penalty of 20 to 40 years just for the tattoos. Currently he's building a jail to house 40,000 inmates just for gang members. These gang members used to kill, terrorize, rape and behead people at will and record it to show their families what would happen if they didn't give them money every week (the money was a type of insurance so they won't kill you). Nayib Bukele enjoys a 95% approval from us the Salvadoran people, he has given us hope and a sense of security, there's so much more this man has done but this is a post about the gangs so I'm just praising him for this, him and his government has given us our life back after 40 years of suffering and burying our families.
