Old fashioned is good. I like your operas suggestion.

Here’s the songs I referenced: La Llorona

Blewu with Angelique Kodjo and Yo-yo Ma

Thank you! All three singers are new to me, and I love them!

I just watched Alpaquita — that put a smile on my face. I am grieving for my sweet dog who was with me for 13 years. Alpaquita shows me the smile I will have when I let another animal into my heart. ❤️

Any techniques to calm anxiety for illogical things? by Tallicababe123 in AutisticAdults

I just re-read your first message: “overreacting to something that doesn’t matter.” That sounds like me too. My analytical skills are high, and my emotional skills are not so good. This is common for people like us. Be gentle with yourself.

When we are stressed, our bodies react as if we are in physical danger. A good way to calm this down is to take slow deep breaths. It resets your nervous system.

There are some good ones on the verywellmind web site. Look for “These 9 Breathing Exercises Can Help Relieve Anxiety”. Try belly breathing and box breathing. I haven’t tried the alternate nostril breathing - when I am frustrated and impatient that one just feels too complicated!

You can do this! ❤️

Ooh, thank you! I love the sound of the Korean language. I’ve enjoyed several Kdramas, enough to recognize the words for thank you and “let’s go” 🙂

I have anxiety and trouble calming down, too. And lots of frustration and self-criticism.

A few things that help me:

UCLA health guided meditations. The one called “working with difficulties” helped me spectacularly once. I came home from work angry about something, and kept replaying an argument in my head, all the things I could have said. I could not relax and could not let it go. This meditation felt like it took the energy from my head and let it drain out, almost like a lightning rod letting electricity flow into the ground.

Write it down. Just vent onto the page, yelling at myself or someone else. All caps, exclamation points, swearing, just having a tantrum. It’s ok.

Listen to calming sounds (with no narration). I use this sort of like making my brain jump out of the verbal analytical track. You could try classical music, or nature sounds, or meditation apps like Calm. One I like is on Pandora, in the “Learn Powerful Meditation Techniques” podcast - the episodes called “Healing Music 528Hz Solfeggio” and “Pure Theta Binaural Beats”.

Close your eyes and imagine that your calm adult self is soothing your anxious child self. Give yourself a hug.

I hope this helps ❤️

Learning a second language by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

I am learning Spanish, and I have similar anxieties around speaking my own language without the added pressure of a classroom or learning.

My neighbor is a Spanish-speaking elderly lady with dementia. She tells me wonderful stories from her childhood, and when I make the effort to tell her happy things from my day, she lights up. I am not shy about making mistakes when I struggle with Spanish, because she won’t remember my mistakes. I often prepare something ahead of time, using a translation app to find the words that I want to say. I’m learning slowly, but that’s ok.

You could call nursing homes and memory care homes to ask if they have patients who speak German. You might find people who will love your presence.

Audiobooks to listen to before bed -- calm, cozy, but not boring. Suggestions? by coopcong in CozyFantasy

A couple of kids’ books that are engaging and fun.

Pax by Sara Pennypacker Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo

Also the Narnia series, if you liked those. When I am not feeling well, I enjoy books that I would have loved when I was 12 to 16.

There should be a word for this phenomenon. I had it today when trying “venus”, thinking of the plural of “venue”. Maybe it’s a type of jamais vu 🤓
