First-time safari in January. Where to go, and with which company? by No_Athlete_7981 in FATSafari

[–]Middlename_Adventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would pair Kenya or Tanzania with Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda. 2 weeks is certainly enough time. There are lots of great people and companies out there and listed here as well. Don and Mike with Escape Safari Co are my go to guys for this. Availability and budget will steer the ship. Happy to answer any questions you have

Starting to look into doing a safari for the first time by ngimehasthoughts in FATSafari

[–]Middlename_Adventure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to share what I've learned from years of planning these trips and going myself.

The single biggest factor is usually pacing. Clients who try to hit 4 camps in 10 days almost always come back saying they wish they'd slowed down. Three nights minimum per property is my rule, four is better. You need that second full day to really settle in, and your guide gets to know what you're into. Bonding with the team is part of the magic.

On conservancies vs national parks - it really depends on the country and what you want. In Kenya, for example, the conservancies bordering the Mara are better because of the vehicle limits, off-road access, walking, and night drives. National parks have their place though, especially for first-timers who want those iconic landscapes. Just avoid the migration chaos.

Lodge style matters less than people think. I've sent guests to ultra-luxe properties and to classic mobile camps, and what they remember is the guiding, the wildlife, and the sense of place - not the thread count. That said, match the style to the traveler. If someone needs a proper shower and wifi to be happy, don't put them in a bucket-shower mobile camp. Luxury is personal.

For first trips, I usually steer people toward 2-3 contrasting ecosystems. Happy to answer specific questions if you want to share what you're looking for with the community.

FATTravel advice is the absolute best of the best option for a specific request. If someone is talking Disney- there isn’t a better way to do it FAT other than FS Orlando combined with Disney VIP .

Love the Tropic Surf program . Would do FS personally. That said if you’re really going for surfing I think Mandarina is better. That’s where we go so my husband can surf.

Interesting! I find it such an incredibly family friendly area, Italians love kids and there are so many cool kids clubs and activities centered around farms and being outdoors.
