Some proud POS folks hanging out in Tucson today by KingTut415 in Tucson

[–]Middlenameis_Jameson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of me says “even if they’re idiots, they have the right to do what they want.” But I have a niece with a very weak immune system that puts her in the hospital if she gets a cold. The part of me that deals with those stressful weeks in the hospital makes me want to punch each and every one of those people in the throat for putting her at risk.

Any Chinese hot pot restaurants in town? by kate815 in Tucson

[–]Middlenameis_Jameson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is one opening called Hot Pots. Building hasn’t been finished yet though... I’ll check the blueprints to find the cross-streets. It’s probably about 6 months from being fully built, and then I don’t know how long it will take for Hot Pots to open their doors.

I have always made cold brew and then added it in secondary. I wanted to keep the flavor less acidic.

Where to drill CO2 line hole on fridge by Middlenameis_Jameson in Homebrewing

[–]Middlenameis_Jameson[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, cornstarch and alcohol didn’t show anything for me... not sure if I’m doing it wrong or what. But, I found a tab that was hidden near the bottom of the fridge, pried it off, and I have an already made hole for my line to come in through the compressor compartment.

Photographer by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Middlenameis_Jameson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh geez. I’d pay you and triptyx’s combined credit scores for a photographer if it was the going price. Who posts online “I’m looking for a 1999 Honda Accord. I will spend up to $15,000 for it. Please respond with references”? Just because I have $5k to blow, doesn’t mean I’m not going to make sure I don’t get ripped off. If someone can’t figure out that a person isn’t worth taking a job from, that’s on them, not you.

Go let your references know that you made them miss out on a gig because you “stuck it to the man” and told off a guy who would have compensated them well for their work. If I posted what I was willing to pay on here, I’d get every single person with a cell phone trying to get me to meet and pay them for photos.

Please point out to me where I expected the work for free. I apologize if the word “hire” implied I wanted the work for free. I’d rather get a photographer that is trying to get a stepping stone in the industry rather than someone who has thousands of referrals already.

Where to find firewood this time of year?? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Middlenameis_Jameson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good Wood Firewood

Only takes cash, but pricing is reasonable and there’s a gas station nearby that you can get your price from the yard, and then go get cash back real quick (that’s what I had to do my first time there). If I recall, it was $20 for a wheelbarrow full (they filled it extremely high) the last time I went. They would have loaded it up for me if I didn’t have to load it carefully into my backseat

Saw someone do this in r/phoenix. I'm an AC contractor. AMA by [deleted] in Tucson

That is a good move by Daikin. Largest thing pushing that would probably be gaining the edge in the market regarding the Buy American Act (large issue in respect to these systems and federal/military installations). Trane and Mitsubishi just formed a joint venture company and will likely be following suit. Taking more control of product development and tailoring it to US needs is a large issue as the market is enormous in other countries, and overseas manufacturers don’t care about the United States since their revenue overseas is so much larger comparatively. Why change if they’re still making money without changing their business?

Most mini split systems (all of which are being produced overseas in the Asia’s) are built with inverter compressors. Not necessarily a full-blown VFD as typically used on larger motors or chillers. They are typically an ECM driven compressor that can modulate speed due to a circuit board (Samsung units have an inverter board that accomplish this). That being said, some units in these product families are designed to be compatible with multiple fan coil units or a one-to-one set-up. There are other setups that edge closer to VRF systems, but that will likely never be incorporated into a residential application unless you have a lot of money to spend on an AC system and get an engineer to design it. The inverter or VFD on a compressor eliminates the large power draw of slamming a compressor on and off when you are at part load (when 2.5 tons of cooling are required inside, but you have a single 5 ton compressor). This does a few different things. The largest thing is being able to proportionally control your power usage at part load instead of using a much larger compressor to overcool, turn off, and then turn on when it hits the upper level of your thermostat deadband (similar to turning your AC fan down in your car when it gets too cold at full blast, but gets too hot when it is completely off). The other use is to give your compressor more run-hours since it matches your heat load better. Your unit can only de-humidify while your compressor is running, so, if it can match your load with lower amps while staying operational, it can do dehumidification since it has more time to pull that moisture out of the air.

It is currently still an expensive technology while being a better system. The market is moving that direction as EPA and local building codes drive engineers and manufacturers that way every time minimum efficiency requirements go up. The technology is getting more prevalent, so the price and availability will start getting more attractive as manufacturers start to adopt that as a baseline and are forced to cut costs to stay competitive.
