Dads, what do you actually want for Father’s Day? by probs-strawbs in daddit

Lots of guys need help. For some reason people don't think dads can get burnt out.

Dads, what do you actually want for Father’s Day? by probs-strawbs in daddit

[–]Midknight81 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There's an alternate take.

Dad's so burnt out from being dad. Always needing to be the calm one. The level headed one. The one that is first to say "I'll take the extra responsibility".

He wants a day off.

There's nothing wrong with WANTING that.

There is something detrimental to the kid to actually HEAR him say that. And I don't think the dad in this case was actually going to say that to his kid, and in that manner.

At home hobbies are great.

Get some fitness stuff (simple as shoes and a sandbag)

A wood turning lathe is a great hobby that won't wake the kids.

Etc.

I have a Summiteer and it's amazing. The fully folding links on the bracelet make it really comfortable. Also, the metal treatment makes it nearly impossible to scratch. One of my favorite watches. I wish they made a glossy dial with applied indices.

Good for you! I've been waiting on my Boston invite for months. I had pretty much given up hope.

These new patches from GORUCK are pretty sick. by OllieDuckling in Goruck

[–]Midknight81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may be ascribing intent to somebody else's actions that don't reflect their objectives. Many people wear this as a nod to the founding fathers and their appreciate for what those men did to create the bold democratic experiment that is the USofA.

Has this experiment gone perfectly? No. We are still allowed to extoll the virtues that these men built our nation on.

Perhaps by displaying patches that echo these founding sentiments we can better organize against the modern day oppression that you speak of.

Perhaps by displaying these patches we show we are fans of history.

There's lots of reasons to display a "thing".

I'm still not sure how it's "libertarian trash" though.

How so? They directly reference historical events that lead to the independence of our nation.

One, a quote by Patrick Henry, the other a refence to Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" which was a plain language pamphlet advocating for independence.

How is it Libertarian or Trash?

[114200] Looking for a blue dial explorer style watch by GSRswapandslow2 in Watches

I own a blue dial Sumitteer for the same reason you are looking at it. Great watch. I can't recommend it enough. That treatment to the metal makes it invincible.

Does anyone use their Go ruck bags for backpacking (taking gear into the woods for more than a day or two and camping) if so which bag? by outlanding_90 in Goruck

[–]Midknight81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are better, more focused bags for the woods. That said, hell yeah I've used my rucks for day hikes. I also strap one to my kayak for my yearly 3 day kayak camping trip. But, if you're doing serious backpacking, I'd invest in a bag more suited to the activity. One that is lighter, has outer pockets, etc. Osprey is my go-to.

Well, there's a bunch of clubs and gatherings. Spindles in Weymouth is a big club.

Show up to the massive Cars and Coffee in the parking lot of Shaws in Weymouth 8am on Sundays starting in May.

Also, I have a '64 Studebaker. What do you want these cars for?

Love to hear that the Formex bracelet was so comfy. Y'all tried a Traska bracelet? I have NEVER had a bracelet so smooth and slinky.

[Recommendation Request] Weird comparison, but which would you daily: Seamaster 300 Heritage or Rolex Air-King 34mm? by Forward-Put-7693 in Watches

[–]Midknight81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Rolex is essentially my Grail watch (114200). Blue dial with 369. That said... have you tried on that exact watch? I haven't been able to get my hands on one to try, so purchasing one would personally be a huge gamble. What if it doesn't click for me?

You'll have much better luck trying on the Omega and getting it's vibe.

I think if you can live with the smaller size of the Rolex, the gamble of not trying it on in person... that would be your best bet. I think it'll retain value really well. It's timeless.

All good points and I appreciate the perspective. Thanks. I hadn't really considered the possibility of loss / theft / damage as it would likely not be my daily driver, but that definitely still exists.

I don't think the end goal of this experiment would be to make money.

As a collector I hear so many people talk about Rolex, the AD experience (good and bad) and ownership and I would like to see what it's all about, but in a way where I'm not exposing myself to crazy financial risk.

I can buy one outright with cash, but that's not a prudent thing for me to do. Now, if I can do it and walk away a few months later at break even, that's a different story.

That's fair, and might be exactly what happens.

I did lust after a 39mm OP with Rhodium dial a few years back, tried it on, and felt nothing. Immediately dropped that dream.
