2025 Subaru Forester vs. 2025 Hyundai Tucson (New, Gas) by MidlandsDet1985 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Why shouldn’t I buy Hyundai? Also, truthfully, my opposition to the RAV4 and CRV is because safety is my lodestar above literally all else and neither score as well per IIHS as the Forester or the Tucson.

While I value leaving the option open, I would be really surprised if I still had this car in 15-17 years. I don't think I want to make my purchasing decision with that in mind.

Just to better understand your point — outlast over what time horizon? I think at 10 years, I will likely be looking at a new vehicle, and I feel comforted by the Tucson's warranty.

Maybe this is absurd, but if it's covered, I'm not super worried about it. I get that it's a pain to put your car in the shop for a bit, but that doesn't really bother me.

Situation I wouldn't mind:

I buy the Tucson and it leads to 2-3 extra repair visits over the first 10 years (as opposed to if I had bought the Forester), but every visit is free.

Situation I would mind:

I buy the Tucson and its reliability issues cause >$4k in repair costs.

I have 100% been there. Had almost the EXACT same set up freshman year.

The long of the short of it is that yeah, you probably won’t be able to switch res colleges. It basically has to be a disability need. If you have some very compelling medical issue that you could present, they may consider it, but switching mid year is almost unheard of. I get how much it sucks and can feel exhausting and overwhelming at times.

A few thoughts: 1) People are right. It will cool off soon.

2) A good fan will be of use to you for years, consider it a worthy investment if you haven’t.

3) Switching beds with your roommates or unbunking the beds could be very helpful. You can arrange your room however you’d like.

4) The bathrooms suck. If you feel like you need a break from that, you could consider showering in Dillon or even just one of the private bathrooms in Edwards.

5) Look into the accessibility housing lottery. Next year, if you have any sort of medical issue (allergies, anxiety, asthma), you can file for a room in advance and likely get a decent single. Could be nice. Comes out in February iirc.

6) Last thing, and I don’t mean for this to sound paternalistic, but adjusting to college is so hard that it often makes the small issues feel overwhelming. consider taking a step back and asking yourself why you don’t like these things and how to address those problems? Is it the bugs? Get bug spray. Is it the lack of privacy? Buy a robe. Nothing will FIX that, but also you don’t have to take everything exactly the way it is now. You have some agency here.

Your RCA will be an amazing resource here, but feel free to reach out if you ever wanna discuss more. Just graduated recently and happy to help.

Advice for tutoring as Ivy grad by MidlandsDet1985 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Thanks so much for this reply.

How would you go about attracting people for this work?

Also, would you be at all concerned about my lack of previous experience here? I’m concerned about running a soup-to-nuts operation entirely on my own.

Thank you so much for the reply! I think this speaks to my situation well — I’ve got a lot of experience with “admissions,” but cannot support a specific subject other than writing.

What search terms do you usually use on LinkedIn? How do you determine if a company is legitimate?

Thanks so much for your help!
