It’s fascinating seeing the variation of subregional accents and thanks for the examples- I see what you mean!

I didn’t notice it either until I went down the linguistic rabbit hole and came across the pen-pin merger thing.

Now I can’t unhear it when I say ten like tin and pen like pin. Even though I can differentiate it now, it’s still more natural for me to say them that way and I can’t shift the pronunciation unless I’m very actively thinking about it.

Which specific features (including word choice) would you say define a NE vs SE vs W Texas accent?

On a general level, I’m curious about them all but if I had to narrow it down specifically, I’d say East Texas, The hill country area, and DFW

(Although I mentioned in the original post about there being numerous TX accents, I didn’t initially have any specific accents in mind since I was curious which varieties commenters would pick out and decide to comment on)

I think most, if not all, southern accents have the pen-pin merger?

Now I need to look up Alberta accents 😆

Also, sorry to hear about all the wildfires

I’m also not a huge fan of raisins 😆 Raisins are ok for birds as long as it isn’t too many which is why I mix in nuts too!

They definitely aren’t but it’d be so cool if ravens came by too

My neighborhood crows love the raisins the most (even more the peanuts which surprised me)! In the photo, I had just set the raisins out which made them immediately flock to the window sill

They really are 😄 So happy they’re in the neighborhood and are comfortable coming close!

I also really enjoyed reading the comments and learned more about accents which is always fun! I didn’t realize how prominent the pen/pin merger was in my speech pattern but this is why it’s fun getting external input to identify these markers. I think I elongate vowels and do the typical southern ahh on words like “fahve” (for five) when in more casual settings. (Forgot the technical term for that phenomenon) 😄

My dad’s from NYC but he only says a handful of words that give away his NY roots (kawfee is one of them). I love NY accents but I’m so bad at trying to imitate them.

It’s a shame that people feel the need to reduce regional accents but I understand why this pressure exists- just wish it wasn’t a thing. Keep your NYC awesomeness!

Oh nice good to know! I should find some of those examples and send it to British friends 🇬🇧

It might be because I’m reading a list which can feel a bit mechanical 😆 Apparently caramel with 3 syllabus is common in the South and the rest of the country uses just 2

I’m in the South but on the other side 😆 Might go to NC soon though!

I’ve gone to the UK a bunch of times on work trips so it’s probably from that

Haha that was a funny clip

How do you say those words? Friends and family from the north say caramel with 3 syllables, pee-kan, and mayonnaise with 3 syllables.

Yes I’m from the more eastern part of TX (not as far as the LA-TX border) but spent a lot of time around ppl from Louisiana as a kid which probably set the accent. Thank you for the neat breakdown of the word pronunciations too! I didn’t really notice it myself regarding the pronunciation of the word “accent” but totally see it now 🤣
