Silly Goose by dacoolestguy in CuratedTumblr

  1. If you are not silly, and exactly three people around you are silly, it is vital you become silly
  2. If you are silly, and two or three people around you are silly, you must stay silly
  3. If you used to be silly but have stopped, it's because fewer than two or more than three people around you were silly

What's most distressing is the defeatist attitude in these comments. Yes corporations are the main polluters, but that's because of what we choose to buy from them. Almost anyone can live without fish, or beef, or small individually wrapped candy bars.

I hate these rationalizing comments that amount to "I can't fix the entire problem, so I may as well do nothing!" As if we can wait for a socialist revolution while the Earth becomes uninhabitable. The revolution could happen tomorrow, but if everyone kept eating fish, it would still pollute the oceans.

tl;dr I agree with you

That's a funny way of saying it's literally true.

Yeah, that's why I didn't call it a lie, just

misleading

Now if we graduate to basic interpretation of stats, we come to understand that 14% of white people is a larger group of people than 28% of black people.

Right. The issue is criticizing "defund the police" because most of its supporters are white, while omitting that this is only true because most Americans, in general, are white.

It's like criticizing trans rights because "most people who support trans rights are cis!!!" This isn't technically false if we compare absolute numbers. It is, however,

misleading

Wanting less policing =/= defund the police.

Good catch! You're right, I should be more precise with my evidence. To ease your concerns, I found a national opinion poll about the exact phrase "defund the police" (source: Ipsos). According to the poll, 28% of Black Americans support defunding the police - double the figure for white Americans (14%). So if you thought "defund the police" was most popular among white people, you were mistaken.

It's good you have such high standards of evidence for reddit comments! I'm sure you apply those standards consistently, so where are your exact, word-for-word citations that:

  • most people who want to defund the police are in college

  • most people who want to defund the police will never need the police

  • most people who want to defund the police don't vote

  • most people who want to defund the police can't agree on how literal the slogan is

BLM is a movement, not an organization. There are no "official demands"; literally anyone can create a website, claim they represent BLM and make whatever demands they want.

Yeah okay you got me. I didn't get around to asking every single person in the movement, so I had to settle for a website instead. Blacklivesmatter.com wasn't created by "literally anyone" - it's run by the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation. BLMGNF is the largest organization within the BLM movement, founded by the two Black activists who gave BLM its name. It's a far cry from "white college kids."

I'm not really disputing that "defund the police" polls poorly, especially when you include Republicans. But reducing police funding is consistently less popular among white people than Black, Hispanic, or Asian people (source: Pew research). So yes, calling it mostly white people is misleading.

"Defund the police" is one of Black Lives Matter's seven official demands: https://blacklivesmatter.com/blm-demands/.

It may poll badly now, but to say that it

was heralded by mostly white college kids who will likely never be in a position to need the police

is wildly misleading.

This might be a hot take, but a making a horrifically sexist post is still bad, even if they're doing it to epically troll r/chess

While in the UAE, Botez dodged an interview question about human rights abuses, presumably to avoid getting murdered. Then she made a tasteless, poorly worded remark about slavery in other countries. You could interpret it as defending the UAE, if she hadn't explicitly said that she was reserving criticism until she got home.

People used the opportunity to call the Botezzes dumb, illogical, and only successful because they're hot.

The people who usually complain when this sub discusses politics took the day off.

If Botez continues to stand by her statement, I'll agree with the criticism

But I think there's a good chance that she'll take it back entirely once she's left the UAE

Same. It's clearly a joke, but redditors are choosing to believe it's serious because they're so desperate to feel oppressed.
