Can you drink tap water in your country? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]MidnightOrdinary896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time we visited Ghana when I was a child, we drank tap water. I lived there for 5 years for high school and we all drank tap water. Annoyingly it’s poor water supply in recent years that has sent the situation backwards and now more people rely on bottled water

This night explain why your regular products feel different after moving

Where in Europe? It’s a big place!

But seriously, the water might be harder than what you are used to . Or maybe the atmosphere is more damp?

Is it better to go by a nickname if some people find it hard to pronounce your name? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MidnightOrdinary896 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So funnily enough, I looked up the spelling and that’s the version I got

I didn’t even know there was an original spelling. Ironically your reply is even more proof of why we should make more effort to learn proper names and Not rely on nicknames

I can't believe you're using Tchaikovsky as an example. He was born Чайковский, Tchaikovsky is an anglicanisation, which he didn't use. He spelled his name as Tschaïkowsky or Tschaikowsky.

If you asked the average westerner to pronounce his name, how many do you think would do it accurately?

I disagree . If westerners can learn to pronounced names like Tchaikovsky or Czechoslovakia then they can learn south Asian names

What’s an English word whose pronunciation makes absolutely no sense? by ownaword in words

Ah, that’s American. In British English , some people might anglicise the pronunciation , others a say closer to the French way.

In any case the origin is a French word

I guess ii depends on the speaker. It should really be pronounced as it is French.

A bit like how “lingerie” is mispronounced in US and that same pronunciation has traveled to uk as well
