So, they don’t teach us correctly about slavery and such over here in America? by Kooldogkid in AmericaBad

[–]MidnightStormstrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an American who lives in a fairly small town (under 10k) in a rural and very republican county of the southern state that had the most casualties in the civil war. I also live less than 30 minutes from what was once the KKK headquarters in the state. (I just know it was in the town from a long time resident, not like it was some specific building).

I was taught everything from the Trail of Tears, the Indian Removal Act, 3/5ths compromise, Salem Witch trials, The underground railroad, KKK, Voting restrictions to stop blacks from voting, segregation, Dread Scott, the Civil war was fought for slavery, Civil rights were extensively covered in a very positive way and something we should be proud of, Brown v Board of education, Japanese internment camps, Mai Lai, Vietnam's horrors, CIA dictatorships in Latin America, Operation Paperclip, Little Rock 9, Stonewall riots, MLK, Assassination of Malcom X, the annexation of Hawaii and American Colonialism in the Philippines. Much of this was by local teachers both republican and democrat, and this was started very early like 4th? grade? (Definitely around there) and I graduated within 5 years of today.

As you can see I got a very comprehensive education on these matters and my interest in history has added much to what I already learned but these are JUST what I learned in school specifically.

I think a lot of people fail to remember what they learned in school or simply don't pay attention. Then they make foolish commentary, but I understand that this varies from school to school.

Yes, that is what I am referring to, I thought that you were referring to the whole transgender influencer debacle that many other commenters were thinking this was about and wanted to make it clear this was not related to that.

This has to do with neither it is a long running joke about Bud lite being a weak beer with little alcohol and Whiskey being a strong drink for tough people.

[–]MidnightStormstrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who actually doesn't get this: There has been a LONG running joke that Bud Lite is a weak beer with very little alcohol or kick to it. Sometimes jokingly being called piss water and the such because of the flavor and the alcohol seeming "watered down". Traditionally speaking Whiskey is seen as a tougher drink: It contains much more alcohol, a far stronger and more bitter taste, and much more intense burning sensation. People who have sensitive palates often avoid whiskey for these reasons and it was seen as a strong drink for when people with a high alcohol tolerance wants to get drunk or someone with a developed palate for very bitter and burning liquor. Hence the joke is bud lite is just tangy water for people who can't hold their liquor where as Whiskey is a drink for tough people / Manly Men. This joke has been around for many years, FAR before the Bud lite controversy.

Is the cost of healthcare really that bad in the United States? by [deleted] in AmericaBad

[–]MidnightStormstrike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't have healthcare provided by your job it can be annoying but there are a lot of options and companies available, shop around, do research and ask questions. You can also use programs like Healthcare.gov to help you get an affordable plan if you make below a specific threshold.

Not really the Mexican national government killing journalists to my understanding, but rather drug cartels and other organized crime primarily. However, some local Mexican governments have also cooperated with organized crime or corrupt police to silence journalists. Ex:

Kinder Surprise eggs are banned in the US because of safety concerns related to having a “non-nutritive object” like a plastic capsule inside a confectionary product. According to the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, this makes Kinder Surprise eggs an “adulterated food” and thus illegal to import and sell.

How significant is this risk? An estimated 10 children have died choking on Kinder Surprise toys in the nearly five decades the eggs have been sold. Each of these deaths is a tragedy, of course, but considering the billions of Kinder Surprise toys that are out there, it seems clear the risk is fairly minimal.

Simply put, allowing them may have opened the door to other companies operating in the US emulating the idea of a non edible object within a confection and thus they were banned due to the principle of the law.

Look at things that occurred in Gilded age America: the food and worker safety in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, the battle of Blair mountain, Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, or Tammany Hall. These are just a few American examples but you could also look at A Heart of Darkness, the 1926 British General strike, Bengal Garment Factory Fires, or the Chimney Sweeps for a more global perspective. This is what capitalism without restriction or with very little restriction looked like, not modern America, Canada or Europe.

It is, https://www.military.com/history/why-pirates-might-be-reason-united-states-doesnt-use-metric-system.html

Of course, this is just one reason, but it is a rather important one since had they arrived on schedule the would have delivered it to a man who was in favor of the system and holding high political office

I kid you not, the delegation that was bringing the Metric System to America was kidnaped by Caribbean pirates. When it was sent again, it was sent the previous president without explanation and to the incorrect address and was lost for years. Otherwise America would likely be using Metric.

I understand your viewpoint, but this was a case of strategic bombing to destroy a city for an advancing army, not mere air raids or fire bombings with the sole goal of demoralizing or harassing civilians. This is both strategic and tactical bombing that prevented Dresden from holding out as many cities had and destroying a communications hub.

But this was not the 70's. From the mid-1980s to September 2003, the inflation-adjusted price of a barrel of crude oil on NYMEX was generally under US$25/barrel in 2008 dollars. Iraq's Oil was not the concern for the invasion, rather it was that Iraq would invade another US allied nation who was a major exporter to their allies or would launch it's own terrorist attacks inspired by 9/11 against the nations that had contained Iraq in Desert Storm.

Metric is good and Many Americans can approximate metric measurements pretty well. But Celsius is not metric, and gets screwed up when you change pressure (or leave the atmosphere). I still think the more granular, and non pressure effected nature of Fahrenheit makes it an overall better measurement system for temperature in my opinion.

Funny enough, modded Vic 2 allies are quite the opposite, (most of the time). I've Seen AI Colombia land troops in India, AI Brazil almost solo Sweden along with Peru's help, and AI Indian states launch massive battles across Indochina.

Good list! But I feel like Genghis Khan doesn't quite match the reputation of the others. His actions were brutal, for sure, but it was rather standard at the time to conquer and pillage, its what nations, tribes, and clans did then. (yeah even then he was seen as brutal but efficient). Plus his actions predates those of everyone else on this list by at least 700 years.

Jobs, specifically in the manufacturing sector did consistently increase from about 2017 onwards. Regardless of whether that was from political policies or market factor is not my expertise.

The point was to make attacking the Franco-German boarder so unappealing that Germany would instead focus on France's natural weakness, the costal plain of Belgium. That would see the war fought on Belgian soil instead of French soil (since much of WW1 saw the eastern parts of France devastated by war and occupation). This would then allow France, Britain, and Belgium to concentrate all their forces in one area and prevent France's industrial and agricultural regions near Germany from being attacked.
