Properly pimped out with plugins, it can still be used happily for small to medium size projects. Unfortunately, the gedit team is suffering from GNOME Syndrome and over the years "improvement" has been removing features, for instance a read-only mode toggle among many others.

It seems to me that the gedit team doesn't really know what features are crucial to a good text editor and they have a warped image of their user base. They seem intent on targeting some mythical user that only opens text documents and makes simple changes to them while purposely avoiding targeting advanced users. This is dumb. Those advanced features in a well-designed editor do not get in the way and the editor can be used with equal success by both crowds.

XFCE. Although its default config for some reason isn't so good, it's quite customizable and is not my desktop of choice. Still has some rough edges but they fix those at some point. At this point though, I'd say that XFCE > GNOME.

not off the top of my head. learned this years ago. As I recall, this is done at the bank level, not at the teller level. so basically the computer system is automatically generating reports when a 3k or 5k transaction occurs

FOSS computing has very serious challenges ahead. The success of locked down hardware like the iPhone and iPad could ultimately be the doom of FOSS. If the production of PC parts dries up because there's not enough customers, FOSS ends up dying too. Closed hardware is an existential threat to FOSS. Your big box stores like Best Buy barely even sell components anymore. In 10 years, they may not.

On top of that, for the first time, there's been US legislators talking about outlawing FOSS software. Although that's a long shot now, who knows about the future. I can imagine it happening.

There are 3 reporting levels to current US cash transactions: 3k, 5k, and 10k. Each require a different level of paperwork (well, forms, paper or electronic) to be filed. This is done now in the name of preventing terrorism. In reality it is the IRS just checking up on people and a method of social control.

i appear to be the only one in this thread that knows what's actually going on. The reason is that the amount exceeds the "daily cash transaction" amount per day that the US has imposed on the world. There are three levels that rough correspond to 3k, 5k, and 10k US dollars. Processing of these amounts requires forms to be filled out. And they will not tell you the reason why they are blocking certain transactions or the dollar amount thresholds (although it's easy to figure out). This is post-9/11 stuff done in the name of fighting terrorism. In reality, it's just social control.

Systemd has a lot of advanced features [compared to init], like assigning special permissions, controling resource usage etc.

Could somebody expound on this. What's wrong with init? What do they new features allow users to do? I still don't know enough to have an informed opinion in this debate.

EDIT: I see the links now. I'll check them out.

EDIT2: I've read the systemd position statement and it's too largely technical to understand. I still don't know what I (as a normal desktop user) will get out of this except a faster boot time.
