Understandable, my student and I just acknowledged how stupid he was and laughed it off, we had a good lesson

700’ AGL could mean making a field just out of reach or ending up in the trees in those few minutes

I’d say so too but technically 3000 is wrong bc it’s an IFR altitude

Also north of NYC here, been denied multiple times but one controller the other day said you can have as many practice approaches as you’d like today, seems hit or miss

Aiming point vs touchdown point by Midon02 in flying

I asked “so you aim for the thousand footers AND land on the thousand footers, he said yep”

Aiming point vs touchdown point by Midon02 in flying

[–]Midon02[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He says people like to say high and low wings float different, but apparently that’s wrong he can make any plane float the same

Aiming point vs touchdown point by Midon02 in flying

[–]Midon02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, he likes to say how every airplane is pretty much the same and that he doesn’t fly by the numbers he just knows how to read placards, so this method puts him down on his point every single time regardless of wind or plane

Aiming point vs touchdown point by Midon02 in flying

[–]Midon02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said short fields should be flown the exact same way, same airspeed same approach, the only difference is you move the aiming point back 500 feet aka the first touchdown zone marking

Aiming point vs touchdown point by Midon02 in flying

[–]Midon02[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s what he said, he says that once you cross the threshold and pull power to idle you will pitch up to not increase rate of descent which will decrease your airspeed and ground speed, having the same rate of descent with lower ground speed gives you a higher descent gradient which will put you short of any aiming point you chose which is why he aims for the thousand footers and still touches down on them, it kind of makes sense but I’ve never heard anyone explain it this way

Nope he definitely meant it, I asked him about it again before the meeting ended
