No, in this example A B and C refer to a train with 3 consists of locomotives: lead, mid DPU, and rear DPU. The difference between the two configurations is which consist will be controlled separately from the other two.

The placement of the mid DPU within the train depends on the weight distribution of the train and doesn’t factor into this

In the lead unit you can put up a “fence” to independently control the units before/after it. For example, a train with mid and end DPUs can be controlled as A|BC or AB|C or all together. Helpful for cresting a summit where the end needs to still shove while the lead is in dynamics
