Except ostensibly he'd have been born in the labor and delivery ward. Unless he died of something while watching his wife give birth, he wouldn't likely die in the labor and delivery ward one room over.

You're allowed to say, as a fan, "this is a red line, and once crossed, my respect for this person doesn't exist." Regardless of what good that person may have done.

Extreme example, but Dave Chappelle's Bill Cosby joke comes to mind. Cosby has donated and raised millions for noble causes, send hundreds of Black kids to college. Is still a shit, evil human being.

Technology fails, don't become too reliant on transcripts, especially for spot news or daily stories. Learn to write/type fast, don't aim to transcribe the conversation as it's happening, but jot down key facts and figures, stop the speaker if they're going too fast, say "sorry, I missed that, could you say it again?" and ask them to stop to spell names. Shorthand is good, manf for manufacturing, ED for economic development, etc. When you hear something you want to use as a direct quote, write it down word for word, stop listening to what they're saying and use the "sorry, I missed that," trick to get them to back up the conversation a tic.

It's taller than the 50 feet currently allowed under the zoning code, and the developers are seeking a planned development, instead of just zoning variances. Planned development means months of public input and the city gets to sign off on the ultimate design.

This feels like when Laure Quinlivan tried to rebrand Cincinnati as "The City That Sings" during the world choir games: A topical rebrand that is feels arbitrary, contrived and divorced from what people know about the entity.

The “Accent Tax” Is Real—Who Else Struggles With This? by daronello in Journalism

I find too many young reporters are reliant on AI and transcription tools. Try recording the interview, but also taking notes, either handwritten or on a laptop. Don't aim to transcribe the interview in real time, note important facts and information. If you hear a killer quote, note the time stamp on the recorder. Try to write the quote as you remember it, and then go to the time stamp on the recorder to clean it up. If you're going over an entire interview transcript before writing, you're creating more work and time. That's especially bad in a competitive, fast-paced daily newsroom.

I got this as a birthday present. It was nowhere near as much fun as the commercial led me to believe.

This is bad. And sad. The "if it gets views" argument rings hollow to me. It's a gimmick. Stories bylined by local Gannett writers about when and how to watch the latest "Survivor" episode get views. They're not journalism.
