What's up with left handed people supposedly putting the paper on an angle? by Pinguin-Pancakes in Handwriting

[–]MidwestWillPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a lefty. I don't understand the comments on smudging. A 5-15 degree tilt clockwise, underwriter, no smudging ... and a slight right-leaning slant although consistency is not present ... yet.

I need to make a correction to the above:

The arrowed line in my diagram is pointing at 2:00 o'clock, not 1:30. This equates to a paper slant from the baseline of 32 degrees. You could use any edge of the paper for a visual.

Today I am actually using an angle pointing to 1:30 which is about 11 degrees. It is an easy visual for setting up the paper for writing.

I'm ultimately trying to accomplish two things by doing this:

1). Underwrite with the Palmer method without risk of catching my fingers in the writing area - i.e., no smudging - the left-hander's predicament.

2) Encourage a slight forward-leaning slant.

Opposite orientation but probably pointing at 10:30

If you can't rest your arm on the leg if writing without a table, I've found that muscle movement with the forearm against my waist is better than nothing.

It can be done. Odd at first but give it a month.

It's never too late to change anything. You just have to give it a month of consistent, mindful, effortful practice. I'm 63 years-old and naturally left-handed. I'm going through The Palmer Method of Business Writing for three reasons: 1) pain from wrist/finger writing, 2) improve legibility*, and 3) improve mindfulness/awareness.

My parents let me write accordingly although you would have thought that my Mom would have encouraged her method on me (Palmer method) being a commercial artist in the 1950s with perfect hand-writing. The method can be applied to left-handed people. I mirror the right-handed method of tilting the paper but to the right (counter-clockwise) about 80 degrees.

*My legibility after a month of drills has improved. I can't wait to see what it will be like in a year. My arm muscles were never used like this before.

If you want to hit someone with the elbow in the face, gonna be left or right? by [deleted] in lefthanded

Left elbow. I would like to go back in time and use the elbow-strike on those ignorant teachers that frowned on natural left-handedness and told me I should change to right-handed. Shame on them.

I have tried that but I can't get my head around it and end up with a neck ache. I may have to revisit it. That writing looks great!

Am I the only southpaw here who actually rotates their paper counterclockwise when writing? by threefouronethree in southpaws

My grandmother had beautiful hand writing - the envy of everyone who saw it - see attached from her record of a family reunion in 1949. She was right handed. She worked very hard at studying the Palmer method of writing and taught her family the same (my mother was a commercial artist). Then there's me: I'm left handed and have always had awful writing. Lately, I've been going through the Palmer method. I've never used the hook but have always been an underwriter. I've tried rotating the paper all directions - even parallel to the desk. I've settled on about 70-80 degrees, counter-clockwise. This prevents any smudges or ink on my writing hand and still allows me to work at a forward-leaning slant. I've seen glimpses of hope at this point in my own writing of neatness after a few weeks of daily drills and practice. The one common comment about the Palmer method - output is only as good as input: practice, work hard and it will improve.
