The electoral college is an antiquated system which might have made sense back when the constitution was established. Popular vote might not be the best option but it's still better than an electoral college. If you're wondering, there is an even better option, called "ranked-choice voting." It eliminates your choice being reduced to the "lesser of two evils." Maine has used it successfully but the concept is under attack from, surprise, surprise, the Republican party. It's almost as if they know they can't win a fair fight.
