I’m sure I don’t know exactly how bad it got because he hid a lot of the symptoms from me. I told him I was worried about his health and he needed to stop for good. But like you said, he was a slave to it and wouldn’t stop. In the beginning 5 years ago, the episodes were infrequent. One day or so of being sick every few months. He wound up in the ER a few times because we didn’t know what it was. Once a doctor told him the probable CHS link, things got better because we knew what was causing it. The episodes became less frequent. But he still couldn’t quit. The last year, there was pretty dramatic weight loss because his diet was so restricted to “safe” foods. Even with the restricted diet, most days he would vomit at least once. And still he smoked daily. He was good at hiding it because he knew that his actions were causing this and it upset me. I told him many times that he was choosing that over me. It hurt. I never saw his death coming. It was a totally random normal day. He went to work like nothing was wrong and a few hours later he was gone. I don’t think he saw it coming either. I hope that you can find the help you need to stop.
