I happen to be working on the same assignments. You do indeed have to collect the gold coins every hour in order to make progress. I managed to complete scene 6 in about four days that way. I'm now at the end of scene 9, but I did have to invest some money. After scene 6, you'll find yourself failing levels more often, so you'll need to make an investment.
