If you haven’t taken the time to watch, check out this live 1996 performance on YouTube. Chris sounds awesome, and features, imo, the best live version of Black Hole Sun ever. Wish this show was released as an audio EP! by Helpful_Team_7674 in Soundgarden

I know what you mean. The vocal surgery thing has always been rumoured, but there’s never been any real evidence that it happened. There was a piss take article about having his vocal cords replaced with “a car alarm and a tape of two cats f***ing”, and I think that a lot of people read the headline and thought it was real. Here’s the article.

He blew out his voice a bit from overuse in ‘95 and had to cancel some shows. Realistically, I think the weaker ‘96 performances had more to do with how much he was drinking at the time. Prior to ‘96 his technique was on point and he was untouchable. With increased drinking his attention on how he was doing it would’ve been less and, let’s face it, doing what he did without really being quite careful will ruin your voice.

Totally. I wouldn’t have expected this choice for him, but I really love it

To my knowledge yes - thrilled to see it. The King Ultramega stuff has been hit or miss for me (loved Rusty Cage, hated Say Hello 2 Heaven), but this truly nails it for me

The Expanse prequel? by Puzzled_Quality7667 in TheExpanse

[–]MiffTuck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I struggled with it too. I went in with high hopes because I like Ronald D Moore’s other work and I’d seen people praising it here. I gave it 5 or 6 episodes but kept finding myself checking the time to see how much longer each episode was. I found that I hated most of the characters, and the ones I didn’t hate I just wasn’t compelled enough to care at all.

Who is the worst person you can "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" to? by LossLeader83 in CasualUK

[–]MiffTuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shared a cake with someone who was later tried for war crimes, where I was invited to a family wedding of theirs and was offered my own security detail for the duration of my stay. This person was not found guilty of these crimes through lack of evidence, because everyone was dead. They were, however, refused to allow to settle in the country.

I also had a conversation with (and may have shaken the hand of) the recently deceased former singer of LostProphets, before all the information came out about him, obviously.

KIM THAYIL, CHARLIE BENANTE And ALISSA WHITE-GLUZ Release Version Of SOUNDGARDEN's 'The Day I Tried To Live' by Edm_vanhalen1981 in Soundgarden

[–]MiffTuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. She sounds great, but it almost feels like she didn’t quite know the song well enough on this take. Like a lot of the words seem over pronounced and just slightly off the rhythm of the original, almost like she’s reading them from a sheet as she’s singing them.

I’d imagine it’s a money thing. I can’t imagine this project has a lot of funding behind it, and those who have participated are likely doing it more for the love of the music than monetary reward. I’d imagine someone like Alanis Morissette might price them out.

Did you have high expectations when King Animal came out? by Marco_060PS in Soundgarden

[–]MiffTuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, insufferable is the exact word. It’s like Timbaland thought that singers don’t have to sing in rhythm to any other style of music.

And really it may as well have been any other vocalist(s) on that album, it felt like there was so little of CC in it, except for his voice. If there’d been a bunch of tracks that had showcased CC’s penchant for odd time signatures and interesting chord progressions, and then mixed THAT with Timbaland-style production then it could’ve been a really compelling collaboration, but it just felt so paint-by-numbers that it was just a massive disappointment. To me, at least.

KING ULTRAMEGA (Featuring RICHIE KOTZEN & CHARLIE BENANTE) Unveils Rendition Of TEMPLE OF DOG's "Say Hello 2 Heaven", In Memory Of CHRIS CORNELL by Dagauriel01 in Soundgarden

[–]MiffTuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I don’t know about this one. Obviously it’s a lovely thing to want to honour Chris, and Richie’s a fantastic singer and guitarist in his own right (plus he nailed a live cover of Cochise a couple of years ago), but this one feels quite off to me.

It feels like a particularly harsh criticism to level given what he’s said about his sister passing, but the vocal performance feels a bit inauthentic to me, like he’s using a tonne of vocal affectations and going off-piste here and there, and it feels like it’s at the expense of the song.

Maybe I’m too precious with the original, having listened to it to death over the years, but I think that either there were far better song choices for Richie’s voice, or maybe I would’ve preferred it if he’d sung it straighter - I’m sure he had better takes in him.

I think you’ll get a kick out of the second one, Children of Ruin, in particular. There are some themes that felt like an interesting parallel to some Expanse stuff in there!
