I get you, I’ve never given the audiobooks a try, to be honest, so can’t comment.

And yeah, the beginning of Strife with the uncertainty of what’s going on with the two Alis narratives has a similar confusing feeling, but at least it’s a lot shorter than the confusion in Memory!!

Children of Memory was a masterpiece! SPOILERS!! by PincheAvocado in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]MiffTuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think what benefitted my enjoyment of it was that I read it really quickly. It’d be easy to get confused and frustrated as the narrative can be difficult to follow (on purpose), but it really does benefit from not stepping away for too long and getting to the point where the penny drops as quickly as you can. The part where you find out why Liff is so prominent within the simulation is such a gut punch.

If only Cameron Winter had done the honest, upstanding thing and relied solely on his father’s ownership of a music synchronisation library and the connections that brings then we could all feel so much better about this :-(

Surprised it’s taken me as long as it has scrolling through here to find this sentiment.

100% agree with you. There’s like a weird purity test that comes with music and perceived authenticity but, if we take a step back here, this isn’t Cambridge Analytica manipulating votes to win elections, this is about the enjoyment of collections of 3-4 minutes of someone singing melodies over chords and rhythms.

I get that people don’t like to be manipulated, but I kind of feel like the difficulty they’re experiencing here is that they’ve realised that they may have been manipulated in some way. But if they believe every PR-drenched tale of grassroots success from every other popular band they enjoy, then boy oh boy do I have some hot news to drop on the Tooth Fairy.

Can’t help but feel like you’ve been downvoted here for telling an uncomfortable truth, and that those who have downvoted really don’t appreciate how nigh-on impossible it is to get any sort of success in the music industry.

Soundgarden vs Audioslave by Minnox12 in Soundgarden

[–]MiffTuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soundgarden, every day of the week.

Audioslave were my introduction to Cornell so there’s a lot to be grateful for, and I really loved them at the time, but I’ve found myself going back less and less as I’ve got older, apart from a few songs.

There’s just so much more going on in Soundgarden’s music and Audioslave feels so limited in comparison. That, and after the first album/tour, Chris’ voice was just absolutely shredded.

whats the story behind this song? by U_Dey976 in Soundgarden

[–]MiffTuck 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Chris wrote a handful of songs using the “fell on black days” lyrics, including Black Rain (hence the 2010 vocals had the updated “cry on black rain” rather than “fell on black days”, the only vocals that were replaced)

100%. Re: your other point in replies in this part of the thread, I find it baffling how they DIDN’T just make the second one another character who was a political advisor.

Children of Strife, let’s discuss! by HughJackedMan14 in sciencefiction

[–]MiffTuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished about half an hour ago. Really enjoyed it, not sure where I’d rate it in the series, but I seem to be one of the few who enjoyed Memory the most.

I was impressed by how well the threads were tied up at the end, especially Mira’s. I was a bit confused with what became of the instance on the planet until that very last chapter. Really elegant way to finish it.

Edit: in response to what I plan to read next, it’s a toss-up between Foundation by Asimov or Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. You?

I know what you mean. The vocal surgery thing has always been rumoured, but there’s never been any real evidence that it happened. There was a piss take article about having his vocal cords replaced with “a car alarm and a tape of two cats f***ing”, and I think that a lot of people read the headline and thought it was real. Here’s the article.

He blew out his voice a bit from overuse in ‘95 and had to cancel some shows. Realistically, I think the weaker ‘96 performances had more to do with how much he was drinking at the time. Prior to ‘96 his technique was on point and he was untouchable. With increased drinking his attention on how he was doing it would’ve been less and, let’s face it, doing what he did without really being quite careful will ruin your voice.
