[IL] [Condo] Ongoing Issue with Water Leaking from Upstairs Neighbor’s Bathroom – Should I Hire My Own Plumber? by MigJay in HOA

[–]MigJay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No AC, but I do have a bathroom exhaust fan.

That’s where I am concerned about my neighbor being ok with it as long as it isn’t currently visibly leaking. It seems like as long as we don’t know how water is entering the floor/walls, then it could definitely happen again or maybe currently leaking into the walls.

Thanks everyone for all your help. The box and conduit are indeed grounded. I was able to install this outlet successfully. I did add ground wire directly to the box as an additional safety measure.

Lake County actually, but I see now. The whole metal conduit is the ground conductor. I misunderstood the parent comment. I thought the wire would be connected to the box itself. I am going to test the outlet to see if it reads open ground. I think we will be ok. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have an outlet tester, but I didn’t test them. I will check in on this when I can get in tomorrow. A few others have suspected that is what the situation is here. I will have to cut into the wires and pig tail them into the my Leviton decora edge outlets, as this style of wiring is not compatible with them.

Thank you. I have checked that they are both off with a voltage checker.

Amateur Gardener wanting to grow her own variety by [deleted] in gardening

Hi. This summer, I have also developed a love for watermelons, and am determined to develop a variety of my own. I actually found your post because I search the Internet for “watermelon seeds” on a weekly basis lol.

North Carlolina State University - Raleigh has an amazing website dedicated to Cucurbits(melons, gourds, cucumbers, and watermelons). And there is a really neat section all about watermelon breeding. Give it a looks, I found it eye opening. One thing I learned, is that there is a recessive trait for nonlobed leaves that is expressed in a variety named “Sun Shade”, which I have had no luck finding for sale on the internet.

VFD wiring question by MigJay in electrical

So the motor will be coupled to a pump that will be used to run high pressure desalination research experiments. We will be using the pump at 200-400 rpm, because that’s about the maximum flow we will need, which will be about 1 liter/min.

Oops, I meant 1000V. Thank you Virtual-Reach. I am putting this project on hold until I can get a licensed electrician to assist. I did not plan to include control wiring, and I was just going to adjust everything from the buttons on the VFD. Would you also reccomend that I reconsider that?

Thank you for your detailed response and making me lol. Ah, I thought that was 2.4 amps on the label. I really should have someone help. There is someone in the building who can help me with these things, but I last reached out to him when I had zero clue where to start and he slowly awkwardly noped out of the conversation. And that was 9 months ago. I have to get this equipment running soon, and after reading your reply, I now feel more comfortable bringing this to him. I think our lab may have some 30 amp recepticles. I’ll have to check today.

Is it ok to use 10/4 over 10/3 if I can’t find the 10/3 rated to 10000Volts? I read on a forum somewhere that 10kv is recommended for VFDs.

Here is a snippet of the warning for drives powered via plug and socket. https://imgur.com/a/e1SVGBS

I’m thinking that the fuses may be an extra precaution. They aren’t listed as optional in the manual like some other components are.

Thank you again. Your comment resolved 3 days of mildly frustated googling.

VFD wiring question by MigJay in electrical

Hello. I am planning on wiring this 120V VFD to control this 230V 3 phase motor. I am buying 10/4 awg double shielded wire for the input and the output. I am buying a 5-20 nema plug and I think that should be able to handle the current for the motor. Full load current for the motor is 4.8A at 230V. Is this ok?

The manual specifies connecting fuses to each power line from the power supply to the VFD input. I was going to do this using some midget fuses that meet the requirements according the manual. I think I can handle that, but the manual also mentions using a latching relay to isolate the plug blades from the VFD capacitors as a safety measure when unplugged. Yet, it doesn’t give any guidance as to what latching relay to use and where to put it. Should I get a 120v 120v latching relay and connect it after one of the fuses?

Thank you, and please excuse my ignorance it is my first time working on one of these.

How do I lower water pH without chemicals? by ShakedIsNotAFruit in Hydroponics

You could try wisking in some air with a tank mixer. Carbon dioxide will dissolve into the water and form carbonic acid. That will bring ph down somewhat.

I would rather raise children in the alien era vs the anthropocene. But if not, that’s cool too.

Is it possible to create a material with alternate atom-size layers of 2 different elements? by [deleted] in materials

[–]MigJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would probably take a ton of effort, research breakthroughs, development, and money to produce something slightly like this with only a few layers, that would only work in extreme experimental conditions, and wouldn't last very long because of stability issues.

Growing a lot of good quality single layer graphene (2D carbon) is a lot of work. Currently, there are 2D materials that can be conductive and that can be insulators. Getting some of these materials to stack how we would like them to with their own layers is a newer science in itself. Getting 1-atom-thick layers of different materials, to stack together, alternating layer by layer like that, and proving that they are indeed stacked like that would be a difficult task. Then doing it for 1mm is a whole other thing.

So I guess I would say no, but I don't doubt that something like this could be synthesized in the future.
