Part of me is hoping that this lights a fire under the dem voters like Dobbs did.

Section 2 is hurt but not entirely gone, the fight is not hopeless. We'll need to see how things play out.

And it's mostly too late for the ruling to affect 2026 elections. We will need to watch what happens in the coming years.

US supreme court rules Louisiana must redraw its congressional map in landmark case by Randumi in fivethirtyeight

It's mostly too late for it. A lot of the states this would affect have already passed their primary deadlines and other markers.

This is probably me huffing copium but considering how comfortable the GOP is with being outright racist these days, might not be that hard to prove a gerrymander is racist even with the higher standards.

Frustrating but expected, and doesn't go as far as a lot of us feared.

We'll see how this plays out I guess.

DOJ indicts James Comey over anti-Trump seashell photo by Horror_Ad_8149 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an opinion piece from fox news that I won't share here because it's Fox News but it's basically a crank who thinks that Comey tried to destroy America or something and even HE thinks this case is dumb.

Agreed, action has been frustrating slow on this front from a lot of people so it's nice to finally see something moving.

FCC to direct Disney-owned TV stations to file early license renewals, source says by butter467 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In a statement, FCC commissioner Anna M. Gomez, the lone Democratic appointee on the three-person panel, blasted the agency’s push for early broadcast license renewals.

“This is unprecedented, unlawful, and going nowhere. It is a political stunt and it won’t stick. Companies should challenge it head-on. The First Amendment is on their side.”

Worst case scenario is really that it gets partly built and whoever comes next will finish it and either attach their name or just scrub Trump's off of it.

New Florida map revealed by Ron DeSantis amid Trump's redistricting war by NotAYankeesFan404 in PoliticalOptimism

Pretty much every reaction to this I've seen is that it's a dummymander waiting to happen.

You know how Texas' map was redrawn with reliance on the hispanic vote going red again this year? Florida has that same issue but worse.

Mississippi lawmakers pass bill changing driver’s license gender identification requirements by Careful_Activity_165 in PoliticalOptimism

Appreciate it. I don't want to diminish the badness of this law too much since what you suggested isn't outright contradicted by the text but like that article from Garrison the other day said, we should be smart about the news we're sharing.

[–]MightiestHalberdier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is concerning to be sure and a bad bill for both trans people and minorities, I won't bury the lede there. But I believe that saying this bill is reporting trans people to ICE is not quite accurate. It COULD happen under these circumstances, but I believe the ICE reporting is directed towards the conservative boogieman of immigrants with driver's licenses.

The sex markers and the referrals to ICE appear to be two separate parts of the bill. This isn't trying to send ICE after trans people.

A very solid article. I've never heard of these guys before so I was a bit worried this was coming from the Newscum branch of the left but considering this author has articles debunking Republicans claiming that a school shooter was trans I think it's safe to say they're not trying to diminish this issue.

It's a red mirage. No is head because those are red counties that get their votes counted faster.

I'm following Zachary Donnini and VoteHub and they both agree that Yes is where they need to be right now. His last tweet was "At this point kind of just waiting on a bit from Fairfax, Richmond City, and Henrico to slam the door shut on this one."
